Can confirm that the local DSE here threw out a lot of stuff, all leftover cases etc. Granted they were leftovers nobody wanted you would think they would donate to a local op shop?

If they cant give them away for 25c then why would an op shop do any better? Not worth their time moving them around for that much money from them.
Op shops are not a dumping ground for useless crap, they are for things that are still useful that people want to dontate. That is why they dont accept collapesed pee stained matteresses and sofas that have worn thru and springs sticking out.
I suppose yeah you are correct, there wasn't just complete garbage though

No, they just have to put up with people kindly dumping such junk by clothing bins.

I went in to DSE Riccarton a few days out from closing and I was interested in a couple of the A4 sized Perspex sign stands, but they were wanting $10 each! Would've thought they would flick them off for $1 or $2 each. They were asking too much for their used fittings.

JB are already in or near some of the malls where DSE had stores (Henderson, New Lynn and St Lukes, for example), so I wonder who'll take over those sites.
That Britomart store is in a good site, although that area is going to be swamped with construction for the next few years, which lowers its appeal substantially.
Closest JB to Henderson is either Westgate or Lynnmall depending on whether your counting distance or time and time of day etc. This is probably close enough for JB Hifi particularly since they're still relatively small and Henderson shopping seems to be losing out to Westgate, but it's not exactly similar to New Lynn or St Lukes. However the DSE Store in Westcity is I expect too small for JB Hifi even if they wanted to. PB Tech is of course just outside. NL & HN are nearby.

This article about the sites they are vacating says something about another electronics retailer taking a couple of them (right at the end) - anyone know who it might be?
However, in smaller towns, such as Alexandra, Kerikeri and Masterton, Wolland said they might struggle to find a replacement, even though Dick Smith often occupied one of the best spots in town.
Most of the retailers interested in the sites were not involved in electronics, except for one local brand which had secured a couple of sites hoping to capitalise on the Dick Smith factor.
The new entrant Australian retailer, which he could not reveal for confidentiality reasons, had been planning to cross the Tasman anyway.
"The closure of the Dick Smith's chains has simply accelerated their rollout."
What about the new entrant Australian retailer? Any word on who that is yet? I'm presuming it's not electronics although from the wording I don't think it can be ruled out. (But I'm also not sure why any would want to open anyway.)

They would save money if they didn't give receipts out. Whats the point lol.
Proper receipts function as tax invoices for GST etc AFAIK. I'm pretty sure there's still a legal requirement for them to supply one on request even if in receivership, it's probably simpler to just provide them all. I know they were selling all their fittings etc, but I doubt the left over receipt paper would have made them much money if any. As for staff time, well it's only the time taken to print receipt itself. I'm pretty sure they'd still want to enter all purchases into their system to reduce the possibility of staff theft etc. From a general customer POV, for non parallel imported items with a manufacturer or importer in NZ who isn't DSE (i.e. doesn't apply to DSE cables etc) receipts also help with warranty and CGA disputes.
