So am I correct in interpreting this to say that if you have a balance on your card in any currency then I will be charged $1.00 per month, but if I have no money in any currency loaded then I won't be charged any fees?  It is confusion around the monthly charge that has always prevented me from activating the card...

Yeah that's right, so spend your $300 quickly and avoid the $1 fee :)

What happens after the next month though when you have a $0 balance but it comes to taking the $1 monthly fee? And then the next month?

I'm also wanting to confirm the answer to this question. I too have thus far avoided activating my card due to being unclear as to exactly how the charges work (I really don't need a third credit card unless it's cost-effective!). Is someone with a (working) card able to confirm for sure that there is no charge when the balance is nil (ie, that it still doesn't charge and/or charge a penalty for not having the cash to pay for the monthly charge)? Thanks.

If you have no balance in your card then no fee is taken and you don't owe anything.

No charge if all balances are zero.

I haven't bothered registering for the OneSmart credit card as I don't need another credit card and I only wanted an Airpoints card.

But let me see if I've got this straight: If I activate my OneSmart credit card, load $300 onto it, spend the $300 within one month, then I'll get 50 airpoints and pay no fees on the OneSmart card?  And even though it's meant to be a travel card I can do the spending in NZ at any place that normally accepts MasterCard?

If I've understood that correctly then it seems like a good deal (assuming Pak n Save accept MasterCard, which is probably the only place that I could spend $300 in one month).

Yup. I'm pretty sure the first $1 doesn't get charged until a month after activation.

I now use it daily to pay for anything i purchase , petrol , groceries etc

the only places you cannot use them are the dairys etc that say no credit card use (even though its a debit card )

i have NZD and USD loaded on mine

Thanks for the info.  In that case it sounds like a good way to get some airpoints.

Does anyone know what an auto-wallet transfer is? On the fee schedule for the $1 monthly fee, it states:

From 23 July 2013, if there are insufficient funds in your NZD Currency Wallet to pay the fee, an Auto Wallet Transfer will be made. See section 4.2 of the OneSmart Account Terms and Conditionsfor further details.

It means if the NZD balance is zero but there's enough balance in other currencies it will automatically convert the necessary amount to cover the fees.

As in "Don't zero your NZD balance by transferring to other currency because we will still dip into your funds."

SpoonNZ: Noticed this the other day - just spent my $300 a few minutes ago. Going to funnel $300 through my wife's card too, pump the Shairpoints balance up a little further.

I've also just applied for the Air New Zealand American Express card - https://www.americanexpress.com/nz/content/airnz-base-credit-card/. There's no annual fee, and again, 50APD if you spend $300 within three months.

Disclaimer: Obviously this is a proper credit card, so if you have poor impulse control/money management then it might not be a good idea for you, but if you're restrained enough to order, spend $300, then cut it up and send it back it's a very good option.

I'm a member of airpoints (joined on a free signup offer) and would be interested but had a look at the airpoints and can't find too much that interests me to spend it on.

Unfortunately I don't travel with airnz a lot (at all)

Even though the airpoints essentially are $1 for $1, why pay full retail price (in airpoints) when you can often get 20-30% off if the item is on sale.

To me that makes the value of the airpoints reduce from the 1% return (1 point for every $100 spend) to more around the 0.70% return.

My preference is is either a) cashback or b) vouchers. With vouchers I can at least usually use them on an item that's on special.

Having said that, the no fees is tempting to have it as a backup card and I can spend $300 on groceries easily enough.

Airpoints work dollar for dollar on special fares.

I think logo is referring to the items available for purchase/redemption  in the airpoints store rather than airfares.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Has anyone done this yet and had their 50 Airpoints Dollars credited to their account?  My girlfriend and I did recently and I'm wondering how long it will take to see the Airpoints?
