Any bluetooth keyboard/mouse solution, you probably want the usb free most of the time for usb stick connectivity(via a miniusb to female usb connector) or charging(some of those keyboards charge via mini usb)

Yeah good point, need to find a bluetooth one which is quite a bit harder. I wish I knew if they fit. Leaning towards the more expensive one on Amazon that says it suits the Stream 7 but has a picture of an iPad

Has anyone got any experience with this sort of device and 1Gb of RAM?  Given it is (I believe) a full desktop OS, you might get 'death by paging' either in the continuous accessing of the pagefile slowing in lieu of real RAM slowing apps down or perhaps actually wearing out the SSD due to continuous use of the pagefile rewriting SSD cells.

Or am I look at this from the wrong angle?

So i was looking at screen protectors for my new smart watch (which were only 1 cent + $3.99 shipping) and ended up getting the HP stream 7, that 1 click thing makes it so dam easy to purchase lol :)

Yes any machine that runs Windows 8 can run Windows 10


I was thinking in terms of the fact that it uses WIMBoot to ensure Windows uses less storage space, wondering if the same thing would be possible with the technical preview of Windows 10 that is available. 


this is currently blocked with Windows 10, but it will be added before RTM.  Windows 10 implements WIMBoot images in a different way

there are a bunch of optimisations that Windows 8.1 Update 1 does on a 1Gb/16Gb system to make it much better than you'd expect

 

Memory optimization & utilization on 1GB

 

  • HW reserved memory to <130 MB
  • Reduction in OS memory footprint
  • Reduction in Windows Store app (XAML/WWA) memory footprint
  • Reduction in PLM termination to minimize impact on perceived app launch time
  • Disable Fast User Switching
  • Minimize desktop apps when in the modern environment
  • New policy on desktop app pages flushing out of physical memory

Disk optimization on low capacity drives

 

  • A new boot technology referred to as WIM boot

     

    • 16 GB disk storage for 32-bit Windows & Windows RT
    • 32 GB disk storage for 64-bit Windows
  • New compression CODEC to accelerate deployment
  • Use of a common WIM file as both the active user OS and recovery image

no. there are numerous changes Windows makes on a 16Gb system to make it useful

WIM Boot reduced initial OS footprint by 50%
Several OS fixes to control OS growth over time projected to save 4GB over a 1 year period
UI to manage Windows Store apps in disk full conditions
Smaller initial pagefile size
System Restore disabled by default

P1n3apqlExpr3ss: I've had my eyes on this since it was announced and it's now up for pre-order on Amazon. You can get it shipped here direct for $110 USD / $145~ NZD

I'm still waiting on reviews but it has everything you might need for a cheapie

 

  • 1280x800 7 inch IPS display
  • Pretty much the same chipset as my Asus T100 (never had any real performance nags with it)
  • Windows 8.1 (it's just a shame the Windows store isn't anywhere close to Android/iOS)
  • One year Office 365 worth $70 on its own

this z3735f is a (slightly) reduced performance version of the z3740 baytrail-t SoC in the T100TA (a little bit less memory bandwidth).

Hmmm...  I'm on a bike trip for a fortnight in a couple of weeks.  I'm starting to rethink my plan of taking the kids Chromebook (lightweight and battery sipping) which would have been to RDP into my office PC if required.

I've ordered one, probably don't need it but will be interested to see how it runs none the less. Already have bluetooth keyboard that's just sitting around unused so i'm assuming it will work with this. Looks like around $145 NZD shipped which is a pretty decent price if it runs office okay. 

Will be interesting to see how long until Amazon ships since it's currently without estimate.
