Ah okay, makes more sense for SD card. How expensive where these at the time of replacement?

Quick follow up to my earlier reply, apologies for any confusion. seems I should have looked more carefully. Samsung/Seagate, HGST/WD and possibly Toshiba have managed 3 platter 9.5mm drives without helium. So I imagine with helium 4 platters may be possible.

And 1.5TB and 2TB 9.5mm drives suitable for laptops already exist, using 3 platters and 500 GB or 667GB platters. With 750 you could get 2250GB but I suspect no one will do that. If they can push it out to 834GB platters 2.5TB in a 2.5" 9.5mm will be possible and it sounds like 800GB/platter has been achieved by Samsung/Seagate used for 5 platter 4TB drives so possibly 834GB isn't far off.

Alternatively with helium perhaps a 3TB 2.5" 9.5mm drive using just a 750GB platter.

So perhaps things aren't as bad for the 2.5" laptop HD space as I thought. Although it still seems a real niche since I think even with 1TB most people are thinking "do I really need that much space"? And with low demand comes high prices, so then it's even less able to compete with SSDs. (Plus most of those who do need that much space, are buying expensive laptops, so $100 extra or whatever for an SSD instead of a HD doesn't seem a big difference.)

Perhaps a big question is why the sudden increases in areal density? It sounds like the 1TB/square inch estimated limit of PMR has now been exceeded with the 750GB and 800GB platters. Is the real wall with PMR actually a lot higher than estimated, or have manufacturers just finally figured out how to reach it? If it is close to the limit, then we really do need HAMR, BPM or something.

The graph at http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoughlin/2015/06/28/progress-in-hdd-areal-density/ is perhaps fairly revealing. The areal density increases generally happen in bursts, we're currently in one but IMO there's still good reason to think it's coming to an end soon. We can only hope that we don't have a very long wait for the next burst like we did this time.

One good piece of news is this does suggest 1.5TB platters for 3.5" drives may not be that far off.

Thanks, so it wasn't an ultra cheap part, although the production cost wouldn't be much. Wonder whether they'd be so willing with an SSD? I'm sure Sandisk are significantly more generous at handling warranty issues than Transcend and perhaps Amazon, but if I have to send it away to US, from my POV doesn't make much difference. I'm not quite so worried if it takes them a week or 2 more. (The good thing about SSDs is it's fairly difficult for them to blame stuff on user error except perhaps burn marks and broken connectors.) Of course by the time 6 years rolls around and ~500GB drives are sold at US$40 or whatever, perhaps they will be willing even if they aren't now so definitely could be an advantage to the 10 year warranty.

I want the bigger 2.5 drives for games consoles. Never ever having a spinning hdd in a portable machine, just asking for mass data loss.

I agree with you re spinning drives being in mobile devices as a bad idea (tm) but mass data loss, not so much since the invention of this thing they call backups :)

Restore and backup on laptops are not as easy as a desktop since you can't just leave them on backing up to the cloud. Crash plan can stuff around for half an hour before actually transferring anything. Not practice to have a portable machine on for that long unattended in most cases.

the rate spinning drives in portables fail for me means that I won be constantly restoring pretty much.

Something like Shadowprotect which takes tiny incrementals incredibly fast is a good option in my experience. I agree not as easy as with a desktop, but there needs to be a price to pay for mobility, and HDD failure isn't as likely as say, theft, loss or damage to a mobile device so backup is still essential regardless.

A lot of our clients have a NAS at work or home. When they are in the office, it detects and runs an incremental backup immediately and that has been very good.

Missed that deal. Typical.
I purchased a Samsung EVO850 the day before off Amazon.

Still, happy with the price, Less than NZD189 delivered for a 240GB with mounting brackets for a 3.5 drive bay. 189 was the cheapest for the bare drive on PriceSpy here.

Oh, and I never use Amazons currency convertor - it is always cheaper to buy in USD IME.

I didn't order one, but do recall seeing a note that expected time until the order shipped out would be two to three, or two to four weeks (can't remember the exact, but it wasn't immediate shipping).

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.
