It would play 1080p h264 content with ease. It's a bit overpowered for an XBMC box imo, but it's nice to have a bit of headroom.

Yes! I'm considering an i5 thin client to replace my desktop, I don't play any demanding games anymore so the idea of something silent, space saving with a low power draw is very appealing to me. However there aren't any models with DP or DVI so I wouldn't be able to use my monitor at 2560x1440 res, argh!

Should also play 1080i contect (which is harder) as well.
Will probably buy one as a mediaportal client for the bedroom - nice and silent.

I'll probably get the 4GB ram/ 32GB ssd one for 264.10 USD.

Hopefully it really is fine running 24/7.

Hmm 32gb... I'd go for 64 min
reason being is that mepo stores metadata etc on each client.

HowickDota: There's a nice deal on an i3 ultra compact PC for 260NZD shipped with UPS/DHL/FedEx on aliexpress. It's got the same processor as the previous line of i3 NUC's (i3 3217u).
Would make a great HTPC or even low powered desktop.

This would have been perfect when I was putting an HTPC together for my sister to run XBMC! Bit confused on the storage, though - in different places it suggests it's got 500GB, elsewhere an 8GB SSD. If only 8GB, is that enough to run Windows 8 and a few programmes? (assuming all media is on an external drive...)

2 possibilities.

  • 8Gb is enough to run a basic Linux OS and 500Gb SATA drive for data
  • 8Gb SSD accellerator to accompany the 500Gb HDD.  Something in software works out the most frequently accessed files and caches a copy of these to the SSD for much faster future access.
I ordered the dual core celeron version of this machine (the chassis looks the same but I didn't get the wireless add-on) a few days ago for an HTPC and expect it to arrive tomorrow or Monday.  I have a 120Gb mSATA SSD and 4Gb fo RAM here ready for it.

8gb is for linux xbmc or slim windows plus xbmc. You can't put regular win7 or win8 on that small a hdd. Hdd size also depends on whether you store the movies on the htpc or a seperate device. My htpc has 17tb plus a 120gb ssd.

You must surely be running out of room on the 17TB's of drives? I jest, of course! We can't get through everything we've got on our 2TB NAS; I assume you must have it full of blu-ray rips and/or be a hoarder?!

What size SSD would be needed to run Win 7 say, plus a few programmes (but no or very few media files)? I've suggested to my sister she put a SSD in her machine (a ZOTAC ZBOX with an AMD processor; it's not too bad but I think the upgrade would be worth it.)

Well I think that 120gb is the sweet spot for small ssd 2.5" drives. I don't think you save that much $$ by going down to 60gb and the risk isn't worth it. If you are looking at msata ssd drives then that is a different question. I would recommend you google "buildapcsales reddit" and wait for a nice deal on a 120gb ssd from . Postage is about 6 bucks. Your looking at about 85 to 100nzd for 120gb incl postage.

If you want to store movies and os on the same drive then grab a 7200rpm 1 or 2 or 3tb drive.

And yes bluray rips and hoarding
