jonb: As a frequent user, my main way of navigating is using the Discussions bar on the front page and click on the subject headings that look interesting.  A new thread would have to be titled 'deal on xx' and they might clog up the Discussions box.

Looks to me like the genuine 'new deal' number of posts (excluding discussion) to this thread rarely exceeds one or two per day. Based on this assessment clogging the Discussions bar will not be an issue.

Someone pinged me, so here is my view:

  • A new subforum for Bargains/Deals sounds like a good idea.
  • A new topic for each bargain sounds easier to track than a gianth thread.
  • I can filter the front page and Geekzone Live automatic feeds but I think the number of new topics won't be a problem.
  • Every forum has TWO options: Watch Forum and Auto Watch. Use as you wish, and here is how they work:

    • Watch Forum: you receive ONE email to let you know when a new topic is created in that forum. ONE email only unless you reply to the topic and have the notification option checked.
    • Auto Watch: you automatically subscribe to any new topic created in that forum and you will receive notifications as if you had replied to that discussion.

I will work on this later tonight and announce here.

I support the new idea as i was getting a bit annoyed at getting emails several times a day discussing generators or the CGA.  Now (or at least soon) I can just watch the forum and get to see the deals and look at what I'd be interested in.

Yes it was getting too big to just be one thread. Also some deals only lasted a day, while otehrs lasted a lot longer, and the older ones got lost in the other pages.

I'm looking forward to it also. Like some people have said quite a few of the emails were just not relevant and some that were, got lost in the chaff.

If it goes that way I would like to be able to discuss the deals/products/peoples opinions without a mod moving it into a different subforum etc, given it's generally solely related to the products involved in the deal

If it's a Deal and the topic starts a Deal then it shouldn't be moved. If people start discussing product specific features or problems... Well then you folks will have a problem because posting these kinds of discussions is better as a new topic in the proper forum.

In summary if it goes off topic, you have a limited audience and people who look in other forums may not see the discussion and participate/answer. But this is the problem of going off topic, not of the subforum.

just "set answer" the actual posts that are deal posts. better still, make the answer last 7 days or something and then fall off.

If there was a notification for set answer, that would actually work.

There isn't' It wouldn't be manageable. A new forum is in place, hit the [Watch Forum] button to be notified of new topics without subscribing to them and post a new bargain/deal in its own topic.

From the t&c's for the new bargains and deals forum:

Long term Geekzone members are welcome to post their offers and wanted requests. By this we mean that first time posters will not be allowed in this forum.

Maybe consider removing the above t&c clause. We already have the offers and wanted forum for this?

These guys force you to pay postage though on everything, no in store pickup option.

Please post using the new forum, using the new rules.

I'm locking this discussion now otherwise people will just continue posting here.
