Jase2985:

So thats 3 more 20TB drives DOA.

I contacted Seagate to see if I could ship the drives to Sydney instead of Hong Kong (you can't) and enquired about a forward replacement (coincidentally, the monthly check identified 48 bad sectors on a drive in the RAID I am replacing). They are dragging their heals waiting for a reply from the "concerned team" to approve the replacement. These are enterprise level drives and they can't even manage to do a basic DOA swap!

Wow that seems really high defect rate for a smallish sample.

Wondering if posting batch numbers would be useful for those who got the same batch, and are working (for now) to make sure they have suitable backup and monitoring in place.

Shit, I think I also have a DOA 12TB. (out of 2)

One doesn't seem to spin up and makes this regular faint tone... How annoying!

So what's the consensus on the best approach for getting this sorted (ideally a replacement)
Thanks

If you send them back to Seagate, you will get a replacement. This may be a refurbished drive. You must pay return shipping to Hong Kong and you will need to keep records showing the items were sent out of the country and any documents supporting the replacement so you can claim back GST if it is charged again. This would occur if the declared value exceeds $1,000. You would still need to pay Customs and bio-security charges and as far as I know you cannot claim these back.

If you send them back to Amazon, they will issue you a refund. Amazon should cover the return shipping and since they collected GST, they will refund that directly.

I managed to get hold of the "Executive Customer Relations team" by e-mailing pressoffice@amazon.com.au. Unfortunately, that has so far gone nowhere, with Amazon again setting up a return for credit, which I don't want. I have gone back to them one final time before I file formal complaints with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and Commerce Commission (yes, the will investigate complaints about offshore entities). Two users reported on the OzBargain forums that Amazon would provide credit for the cost difference. All I ask is for Amazon to extend the same option to myself.

It’s ridiculous that you have to pay return shipping to Seagate. That should be covered if the hard drive is faulty.

It would have been better if Amazon could ship a new hard drive then be able to return faulty hard drive back. It would have been much better and not having to worry about custom and gst fees.

I don’t know what I would even do if the hard drive comes and it is faulty.

so if you go via amazon you miss out on the cheap drives but get the refund, if you go via seagate youll get drives but have to pay shipping to Hong Kong.

Hey, just a heads up that after chatting with 4 different people on Amazon support chat, I was able to get a $150 gift card loaded on my account which is essentially the difference between what I paid for the drive and what it would cost to buy it now.

This cimbined with the money I'll get from the refund once I return my defective disk should let me buy another one...

My DOA drives are finally on their way to Hong Kong. $80 shipping... I haven't purchased much from Amazon AU, and I don't see myself buying from them in the future after this experience. I'd rather pay a few dollars more locally than have to deal with their inept and willfully ignorant Customer Service.

I'd also rather spend my weekend writing code, now it's an ACCC/CC complaint instead.

Just received my 2 8Tb drives today, 9 days early, found Amazon tracking stopped at the border and parcel track had more info.

both drives now installed in my DS220+ and both working so far.

Just had a 10TB drive die, so keen to understand if someone over ordered and wants to let one or two drives go (12TB+ in size)?

What would people recommend for testing the drives? Mine format successfully in Windows so at least not DOA but I wonder if there's any other particular tests you'd recommend? Thanks!
