Details about the promotion here.
I could download the free albums using a US Microsoft account and after changing my Windows region.
It's a pretty good list of albums, and they can all be downloaded as DRM free MP3s.
EDIT: I can't post links yet, but I found it on the Paul Thorrott's Winsupersite

The OS needs to be set to the US.

Set your region from NZ to US and if that doesn't work, close the store, and reopen it, it worked for me second time around

Thanks a bunch for this after a bit of fiddling I picked up about 17 or 18 albums and will be getting about half a dozen of the box sets at $1.99 too.

Thanks, forgot about that setting in win 8. That worked.

Edit: When clicking on a free album, it loads xbox music, but it then says the album isnt avalaible in your area. I also can't seem to log out of xbox music  account, as there is no log out option, and I think my xbox account is set to NZ, and that doesn't look like it can be changed either.

I had to actually set my gamertag to a US acct... either that or try using a VPN set to the US.... I used both to get it working but once the gamertag was set I didn't need to have the vpn working to download a album...

Oh they have the Led Zepplin Complete (165 songs) for $1.99.  This is definitely joining my collection.

I also couldn't get it to work even with changing the Xbox system and Windows 8.1 regions to United States. It still has the Xbox account as New Zealand and I can't migrate to another region probably because I'm not using a VPN or global mode. The Music app initially opens with the free album for free but gives an error message saying the Windows and Xbox accounts regions don't match so it closes and restarts for New Zealand and the free price is no longer available.

You have to change it to migrate to the US region on the Xbox website not through your console as your console is just that your consoles not your actual xbox account.  There is a downsidee to migrating your actual gamertag.  You can't change it back for 3 months, there's also a small chance that some of your content will no longer work and if you had a xbox music pass it will be cancelled and you will need to repurchase.

I know of people in NZ who have been using a US region account for Xbox successfully for quite some time and they've had any issues (that I know of) eg have been able to buy content, music and video and play these without any issues.

I created a second account account to use for the US store. You have to pay to use the streaming service, so I just used it to download the albums  I wanted and transferred them to my phone.

Yep that will work too since the music is DRM free.

I find the xbox music stuff really confusing, that aside, is there a way to claim these freebies without windows 8 or windows phone? I can log into xbox music via the web with my US set account but can't see anything anywhere that you can even purchase music.

hi Everyone

I found a list  (url given below) that helped me locate some free albums available for download.  Some titles the list have been removed and no longer available.  Could be due to quota limit.  Got myself about 20 free albums today  laughing.  Thanks Microsoft !

I have grabbed 30 so far, but I only see 50 free. Isn't there meant to be 100?
