WD Elements drives (back when they were in rectangular enclosures were WD Green drives. The MyBooks I've cracked open have had WD Black drives.

Interestingly, it looks like they're now using the MyBook enclosures for their cheaper Elements range. No idea what's inside but as it's their budget range, I'd suspect they're Green drives.

I looked at these yesterday, I was like man that's a good deal...

Then I realised that's a hell of a lot of data to lose in one go!

Let us know if it works, I've heard varying stories about manufacturers trying to prevent people from doing this -- they only have themselves to blame though it is crazy that it costs more for the bare drive.

From what I have been told the "firmware to stop people doing this" is just 4k sectors and people with their machines booting BIOS having problems dealing with the drive.

I have pulled a 4TB out of a seagate in the past, slapped it in the PC, UEFI sees it fine, windows sees it fine. No idea what a bios would do with that.

It also just processed an order for me on them. I guess they are dishing out the stock slowly.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought one too.

Also couldn't resist the Wharfedale Sound bar at $99. It'll make a nice sound system for the garage for when I'm working on the cars etc.

I bought one of those instore today, before remembering I had the small car so basically had to leave it in the passanger seat while I went back to spark to see if they had stuffed up my sim swap.

I once opened a WD usb drive only to find that the drive itself was a usb drive.  There were no sata connectors, the logic board on the drive had a usb connector.

WOw - I'd never heard this before and went to have a look and see if I could find any pics... Yep...

Oh, and I got one of the $197 drives as well... I'm getting behind on my 18 month replacement of all my spinning disks...

Cheers - N
