Just a heads up there are some Surface Pro 2 deals around if you need the high spec.(or prefer the 10" form factor)

Almost the same as the 759Usd special now on Amazon. I assume these are all the intel i5 4300U. I would be wary of the earlier 4200 release with lots of moaning about firmware issues.

Word of warning - docks are still pricey.

Surface Pro 4 announcement rumoured soon so expect more price drops.

I got the dock from amazon via youshop approx NZD$170 landed. i5-4300U is the same proc as the current generation S3 8GB/256GB model.

looks like PB has sold out. the Commercial Surface resellers in NZ still have about 10 of these left possibly even sharper price than that

SP3 is the thing to have.

Barely use my desktop anymore, except to play a few games which SP3 cannot handle (nor would many mobile devices be capable of handling).

Wishlist for SP4:
- Even more processing power.
- LTE.
- Higher screen res variants.
- USB-C
- Anything else to give me bragging rights over religious iPad fanatics.

As a "normal consumer" can you access these mythical beasts via the commercial resellers, or are we stuck with the consumer versions with less RAM etc?

The SP3 has a better screen aspect ratio than the SP2 IMO for tablet use. Widescreen tablets like the sp2 are really only usable in landscape mode I have found.
