Nice price. I paid about NZ$300 including youshop shipping for an HGST 5TB drive recently. Those drives rate well.

Thanks for the info.

I tried to buy one. But, the checkout bugged on me.

By, the time I finished dealing with online support, it was sold out ... :(

I missed out last time so ended getting this Seagate one from Amazon.

I signed up for email notification of future Noel Leeming deals.

Easily enough filtered if it gets annoying:)

I believe the Seagate's are SMR... I'd steer clear, unless you know what you're getting into.

Are the WD ones SMR?

^ mmm no double submit detection obviously.

Well have a look here:
http://www.legitreviews.com/seagate-barracuda-st5000dm000-5tb-desktop-hard-drive-review_161241

Pretty interesting. If you read through some of the comments on Amazon/Newegg etc, you also have people going on about weird performance issues.
Just seems to be more DOA and performance issues. Some saying not working as an internal drive or really erratic head parking behavior - though don't fully trust those comments. Some do say it's 'alright'.

Anyway they are selling an external drive way cheaper than you can buy any internal drive, 1 year warranty... Does seems a bit suspicious.

I'd love to buy a few and use as internal drives with FlexRaid F, but just seems like it's worth the premium buying something else.

Though perhaps for media storage these SMR "archive" / cold storage drives are OK?

Another review on Seagate "Archive" drives.
http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_archive_hdd_review_8tb

Anyway just be aware it's not a 'normal' hard drive in there.

Haven't looked at the WD external's as I missed the deal - maybe they're OK?
