Sounds like an advert. As per previous threads on these types of promotions, they may not offer the best deals, especially as the costs are not transparent.

Well, I for one say thanks for posting this... I was wondering when the next one will be.

I'm under no misunderstandings as to the often questionable value of these 'events' and the dodgy nature of the pricing involved, but they can be occasionally useful - eg I want to look at getting a Kobo for my son's birthday, they're one of the few retailers that sell these, and I've not seen them reduce the price over the past few months. The only problem is that it's only on stuff already in stock, so I'll not bother going unless this is the case.

You should ring them and ask what the price will be and availability, and if they can put one aside. If they won't, then that may tell you something.
Many of these types of deals I suspect are to get people into the store, so they can be upsold on other things. For example another retailer was advertising really cheap good brand TV's. When I went into the store, the storeman told me that it was their bottom of the range model and it was pretty rubbishy, but they could do me a deal on a better one. That maybe true, but I was only looking for something basic. I could have got the 'deal' on the better model any day of the week, when they weren't having a promotion. But as I was now in the store, I was more likely to make a purchase, and more likely to be upsold.
Being a Farm card member, I can get this type of cost + % deal everyday with some retailers, and sometimes it isn't cheaper, than when they do their sale rotations. I suspect it works out good for things that they don't usually have on sale, such as some apple products, accessories etc.

I have spoken to them and apparently they've got some Kobo readers in stock, but not sure what models! But, critically, they said they'll be able to order it in from a different store if they don't have it in stock, so that makes it worthwhile going in tomorrow.

I too get a standard discount through work from NL, but they don't stock Kobo products; sometimes the discount from that can be substantial (was the cheapest way to purchase a UE Mega Boom compared to any sale prices on it I've seen since), other times it's just a joke. It's still worth checking it out if you're needing to buy something - I just make sure I'm prepared with having researched the price I would have otherwise been able to get the same item for, eg by checking prices and price history on pricespy.

To help sum this up...
Towards the end of the month, all the retailers will hold their biggest sales in order to make budget.
If you need to buy something big, wait for the last weekend of the month.
Or, if you're really into waiting, the end of the financial year is far more important to them, so that, and Boxing Day, are where you really save!

These sales are often only good for trade in stuff like 2nd hand games as their cost is not a lot.

Looks like Sonos is not specifically excluded - and that's always hard to get much of a discount on. But you can bet there won't be any in stock - thus ruling it out.
