Just got an email linking to this http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/mates-rates-sale/

Its on wednesday even tho the page says today. No idea if it will be any good etc, experience says probably not.

Ooh, I need to get a UE Boom 2 for someone for xmas. From past sales, things like this are usually well discounted in these sales (accessories, headphones as well).

Bassed on previous experience, it won't be, and there is no pay to know the cost price. They had a $1 sale discount on their apple TV. from $299, down to $298.
If you have a Farmlands card or something similar, you can get this discount everyday with Noel Leemings and some other retailers, which I would rather support, as at least Noel Leemings is NZ owned.

Will be interested to have a quick look, but of course 'cost' can be interpreted many ways.... supplier direct supply cost, cost after rebates, supply+wages+rent cost... there is always a way to fiddle it.

I will probably go in, they are the only place still listing the music flow speakers, and I want to get another one for the kitchen which I didnt during harveys last sale on them.

Still doesnt hurt to go in armed with a phone and pricespy to see if there is anything that is actually a deal.

Probably because they are high margin items at normal pricing. I think I will wait for the boxing day sale. They usually have a few really good online deals. Last year I got a Sony AV receiver for $280, which they are currently selling for nearly $800

Yeah, boxing day will have some awesome deals, but these are usually leaders (loss leaders you'd assume at some of those prices). All good if that is the item you want, but for everyday, high-margin items, like BT speakers, headphones, accessories, ink cartridges etc., then these 'cost' + GST sales are pretty good.

Also, note that this says cost. The NL/HN deals (like the 'Thank you to police fire teachers etc. HN deal) are usually cost +5 or cost +10 (then add GST). they will all work out cost about the same I'd think - ie., the average invoiced cost, excluding rebates.

THey dont say how they average the cost either. If its just on a per invoice quantity then one invoice from the supplier at an inflated amount because it is below the minimum could really push the cost way up if the only other invoice for the same item is for heaps with a massive discount. Its just assumed that they are averaged on a unit count basis, they never state that.

Apart from their Boxing day sales, I don't find they are the cheapest. And you can also usually get other retailers to match their prices. It is not a company I am a fan of and I would prefer to support a NZ owned local company where I can.

Yeah, like most other stores in NZ these sales are just floor cost* + 5%. They are really not much better than walking in any other day and negotiating with a salesperson.

*floor cost is not actual store cost price.

Yeah, that is why I don't trust them, and wouldn't shop there unless they had an unbelievable deal that won't be matched. (Although they possibly won't fulfill the order if the deal is too good, based on the tablet fiasco) So they don't have any goodwill left in my books. They are the only retailer I know that has a web page dedicated to error corrections in their leaflets, so errors don't appear to be uncommon, which they should be.
