http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/12/13/basically-giving-them-away-google-promo-offers-20-play-store-credit-for-chromecast-bought-from-dec-13th-till-jan-2nd/

Chrome cast offering $20 Play Store credit but says US Only. Does anyone know if this is bypassable to allow NZers to access? I tried a quick search of Geekzone but didn't find anything about this.

I've tried changing my region to the US and factory resetting the Chromecast with zero success of claiming this offer. I also have a US play store account. I think once the Chromecast connects in a region (eg, NZ) and does a firmware update then the firmware is based off that region and so are the offers since my Chromecast is showing the NZ firmware even after a factory reset and forcing it to go through a US proxy.

I think I have attempted all I can - I don't think diving in deeper is worth the $20US :)

Edit: I am trying this with a Chromecast 2

So you think activating this on a US proxy would be bad too as it would render it US forever? What consequences might that have?

I don't think it does matter. Had Chromecasts since their release in the US and they've always been behind a proxy service. I just don't think it is that easy to claim an offer from outside the US without using a proxy service and jumping through many hoops (like, using a US play account).

Remember Google knows where you are based off your wireless network which is how it manages to get the weather etc.

My original Chromecast from 2 years ago came with a NetFlix subscription ... something like US$40 if I recall.

I simply gave all the appropriate details to a mate in Los Angeles, and he enjoyed the benefit innocent

If you know someone in the US I'm sure they would enjoy the gift, or use the details to claim stuff for you.
