I just walked through JB Hi-Fi in Wellington (down the escalator where the food court is).

They have a Cost+GST sale on all TV's. Apparently it started yesterday and will run during the weekend only. I didn't see any prices posted but I'm sure if you ask they will tell you.

I have no association with JB Hi-Fi, I just thought those in the market might want to have a look. It's just down stairs from where the Sony store are having their lease expiry clearance sale (very convenient).

It's all their stores I believe.

And as many have said before their "cost + GST" is a bit deceptive (cost can be manipulated or not actual reflection of average real cost). A good sale usually a better deal.

Yea, they had one down in Dunedin the other week. My partner was in the market for a surface pro 3 i5, 128gb, but they didn't have any in stock, so got the 256gb with 8gb RAM for around 1500, which was close to the retail price of the 128gb. Think the 128gb would've been around 1250 had they had any in stock..

During their mates rates deal, after getting a sales guy to help establish the price on some speakers, it transpired they were $2 cheaper than the normal jb retail price of $130. I'd take their sales with a grain of salt.

All so negative. They can also be very cheap at times. I bought a soundbar and sub there the other week and it was less than half the retail price. The other retailers couldn't even come close. Tablets tend not to have a lot of margin in them but most TV's do. This sale is only on TV's so if you are in the market anyway then it's worth a comparison right?

Oh definitely they can have good sales. I've bought stuff there before and nobody else came close. Just generally speaking this cost plus sale they do around once a year is usually not a good deal. Maybe there are some high markup items were it could be?

Just sounds a lot better than it really is.

I agree with the doubters. In fact I have figures. Was looking at a 50" Panasonic today - attracted by all the yellow stickers - asked the salesguy for the "ask only" price, was told $1050 - the same TV was on sale at various retailers Boxing Day / New Years for <$900. So their "cost-plus" is BS.

Yes and no.

Discounting by big box retailers is heavily influenced by rebate deals from suppliers. Most staff at these stores wouldn't have a clue in the world that the company is actually paying bottom line for a product once it's sold. The boxing day sales always represent probably the best time to buy many products with suppliers offering heavy rebates to push products in what can be the busiest time of the year for sales of products such as TV's

There are many examples of products around that'll never match boxing day prices. Sony for example had one of their 65" Android TV's for $2199 at Noel Leeming down from $3799. That same TV sells for $3031 now and has appeared on special for $2999 a few times lately at a few retailers. They wouldn't be able to sell it for $2199 now as that price would have been a significant rebate from Sony.

Plus, the NZ:World exchange rates have jumped around so much that it changes the buyprice on the day for stock that sits on the shelf. JB have been advertising a certain 32" Samsung for $598 for the last month, with a "until 2nd March" date on the pricing. The same TV in this weekends special is the same price.

Not that "Special" at all.

If you are concerned you can report it to the cc, for them to look into it.
