Got this deal in an email -- one of the rare times when a large retailer offers a better price than dedicated IT retailers....

https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/computers/computer-accessories/computer-networking/netgear-r7000-100aus-r7000-wireless-router-802-11ac-1900-mbps-dual-band-gigabit/prod127866.html?utm_medium=email&%&utm_campaign=2016.05.11_OnlineClearance&utm_source=Core_Marketing_Programme

It is a shame they don't have a cheaper access point version of this device.  For some reason , 'access points' seem to cost a lot more even though they have fewer features.

And can you put open source firmware on it (DD-WRT/OpenWRT?)

I have the ac1900 (@michaelmurfy's old one) and it's pretty awesome for an all in one device. Happily running Advanced Tomato with all sorts of nice tweaks. I have seen some commentary about open source firmware not being able to do the same levels of wifi hardware acceleration though.

I am looking at upgrading at some stage (dialling up the home network to überkill), but more due to the sprawl of the house and general geekiness, than any criticism of the ac1900's performance.

A quick google says people are running it with ddwrt and advanced tomato, and it will do vlan tagging with tomato. 50/50 as to whether it will do vlan tagging with stock, some say it does, others say only the Malaysian or Singapore firmware will support it.

As for the ddwrt - it will apparently only support 100-300mbit, but the stock firmware will support gbit.

And sorry, I should have said, using this on cable, not fibre. I've double checked the config page and while Advanced Tomato certainly has an option for VLAN tagging, I haven't used it myself.

I have one of these, was running it on Bigpipe fiber at my old flat.

Originally it didnt support VLAN tagging (I used a smart switch to accomplish that instead) but a later firmware upgrade has enabled that feature.

It ran fine for me and handled 200 fiber with no problems whatsoever, wifi coverage and speed is excellent.

it's good wifi coverage, just be aware don't update to the latest firmware, the arlo feature may cause the  problem for 2.4Ghz.

The price is not cheapest, from my memory it's about somewhere around $240.

Can you pull usage information off it (ie per machine?)  and easily assign static ip addresses (ie to the ip and name I want - I've seen some where you can just fix it to the current permanently).

Pity the companies don't host the firmware on a site so you can peruse the options before buying.

Static IP addresses are no problem, I have never turned the usage monitoring on unfortunately so I cant comment on that aspect.

For the static ip, definitely yes using Advanced Tomato. Straightforward and works well.

I don't monitor usage info personally, so don't know how well it works and what level of granularity is there, but there's an option for it.

I currently pull stats from gargoyle and store it - have done it for years just out of interests sake,  But it's something I'd like to continue.  No problems if it's in a different format.

Have just had a play (cough, reasoned and thoroughly researched series of test scenarios) and Advanced Tomato seems to have:

- real time bandwith and IP traffic monitoring, along with graphs for last 24 hours, daily and monthly

- logs of recent website usage and search results (though the search logging didn't seem to work immediately)

- automatic backups of the website usage logs

i.e. waay more stuff than I have ever (and will ever likely) use.
