This year's Amazon Prime Day is on the 12th July.

 

 

On Tuesday, July 12, the second-annual Prime Day will feature more than 100,000 deals worldwide exclusively for Prime members, making it the biggest Amazon event ever. New and existing members in U.S., U.K., Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Belgium, and Austria, will find deals across nearly all departments and categories, ensuring there will be something for everyone. Members in the U.S. can shop starting at midnight PT, with new deals as often as every five minutes throughout the day. To participate in Prime Day, sign-up or start a free trial of Prime on or before July 12 by visiting Amazon Prime Day.

 

In addition to blockbuster deals on Prime Day, July 12, Amazon will offer countdown deals for Prime members every day from July 5 through July 11. That means members in the U.S. will find summer entertainment deals starting July 5 including a 32-inch TV bundle with a Fire TV Stick for $119.99. Countdown deals will include gadgets on-the-go, products perfect for summer travel, for foodies and outdoor living, back-to-school and in-home essentials and daily deals on top of TV series and blockbuster movies available to rent or purchase and instantly stream through the Amazon Video app on TVs, mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire tablets, or online.

What is the benefit to being a prime member in NZ? last time i looked you dont get the free shipping etc? only thing it was good for was a limited streaming service. has this changed?

Free shipping to your reshipping service, prime music is great if you have an amazon echo - bit crap on mobiles, the streming tv and movies is good value too.

I can download those TV shows that I can get free and watch on my smartphone or tablet. Can't do this on Netflix or Hulu.

That does not surprise me. EBgames know how to run a "sale" Their already marked up prices (seriously how are they still in business) goes down to "only slightly above online prices"

I've never used Amazon Prime. Stuff.co.nz did publish this recently

"Amazon Prime: Nasty surprise as annual charge kicks in after 30-day free trial"

"Online shoppers are being warned to watch out for Amazon's premium service which users say stung them with an annual membership fee without adequate warning.

Two Wellington users were shocked to discover debits of around $150 on their accounts last month, only to learn they'd chewed through a 30-day free trial of a service called Amazon Prime, then were billed for a year."

WhilenI agree, I do think Neon/Netflix 2-3day warning email (can't remember if LB did this too) is a good strategy to avoid this 'bill shock' idea, and better still when you can cancel a week out and they allow your trial to continue running... Till it ENDS on the end date?

I did the NF trial at the same time as a Lightbox and Neon trial, cancelled lightbox a week out, Neon is still 'on trial' as its a six month promo deal, and Netflix fell away for a 4-6 weeks until I'd seen all the must-see stuff on Neon. I have since got brought NF and LB back, so their trial works, even if they don't make it a forced 'seemless' transition.

I think you under-estimate how unaware some people can be in regards to being fooled into signing up for such schemes.

 

My 84 year old father is a case-in-point: he simply saw the ability to get free same-day delivery for a parcel to his grandson in the UK, so signed up on the spot. No additional credit card details were required as, of course, he'd already entered them for the purchase of the item (if the card number wasn't already saved in his account). He just happened to mention to me how he would be getting same-day delivery that made me suspicious (this was the week after the coverage in NZ media), so I checked his account and low and behold he'd signed up for Amazon Prime completely unaware of the on-going cost.

 

Sure, some may argue that it's just stupid or careless people that get fooled by such marketing approaches, but I do think Amazon is deliberately underhand with this, and know full-well they'll be making a mint off people who have no knowledge of what they've done or interest in paying for such a service, and often these are vulnerable people like the elderly. I don't think it's much better than the "opt out" charges of Jetstar or other similarly dodgy practices.
