I was expecting this to be a cheap android tablet when it popped up in my inbox.

It's cheap compared to the normal price, but not cheap compared to the alternatives.
I've used powder and tablets and although tablets do give a better clean, powder is good enough in the majority of cases and much cheaper.
no, it's not cheap . I brought 60 for $19 from Uncle Bills .
Common sense is not as common as you think.
Grrrr.... "Individually Wrapped".
Not only are they a pain to use; but also cause an unnecessary amount of additional landfill rubbish...
(My opinion, of course...)

Ours are wrapped in a soluble wrapper, you are not supposed to remove it.

Not sure why you would unwrap them... The instructions specifically say not to, the wrapper is dissolvable - you simpl place it in the dishwasher, usually in the cutlery tray, and start the cycle. No rubbish, no pain to use, and stops you getting any cleaning product on your fingers.
$20 worth of powder will probably last you a year. The powder washes fine, I only use tablets for really really heavy soiling, and even then powder is usually ok.
Not cheap ... I buy them from The Warehouse when they have a special
They currently have a 38 pack for $10

There are different varieties. The more premium/expensive ones are dissolvable, however the cheaper ones come in a plastic wrap that you have to remove when placing in the dishwasher.

I buy ecostore dishwashing powder myself in bulk, 5kg is $35 on trademe. Washing the dishes just as well as the more conventional brands from my experience.

This.
We've bought parallel imported ones before from various websites, and some of them have come with waterproof wrappers that need to be removed first. In this case, the website states "These tablets come individually wrapped which ensures they stay protected from moisture" - sounds like a waterproof wrapper to me...
This isn't *that* great.
I usually pay $18 for a 60 pack of the exact same type at the warehouse in New Lynn

Warehouse seems to be the cheapest place to buy these.
The wrappers are soluble in hot water (try it yourself), but waterproof when splashed with cold water and don't seem to absorb moisture.
They do seem to clean a lot better than powder and certainly a lot tidier to use. You can literally put a dirty lasagne dish in and it comes out clean. They must be quite caustic.
I never have washed sharp knifes or nice glassware in the dishwasher with power or tablets. We do have pitting on our cheapy glassware but we used to get that with loose powder too.
I see there are now laundry detergent tablets. They look like a great idea too.
