In case anyone is interested in getting into smart home lighting with the Philips Hue system, I saw that Noel Leeming have the starter kit on sale (ends today) with the Hub, 2 x white ambience bulbs (E27) and a wireless dimming switch, for $138, normally $199. I went to Mitre10 and they bet it by 15% so it was only $117.

I'm pleased someone found it useful. I also had been looking at the Hue system for a while now, waiting for a sale. I have a couple of Belkin Wemo bulbs, but the interface is a bit clunky, plus being able to change the colour temperature as well as the brightness with the Hue bulbs should be good.

I'm really trying to find some of the colour bulb starter kits at a discount.. I'm waiting until next weekend (Labour weekend) to see if there are some discounts to be had.

Same here. Sometimes Bunnings have them on special, and I seem to recall them being about $210 last time, which may have been June? . Bunnings price looks to be currently the cheapest price.

I have some of the wemo switches which I have hooked up to lights. I have found the secret is to use something like Amazon Alexa to control them with, so you then bypass teh wemo app, which isn't that great. Using Alexa works almost everytime.

At the mitre 10 in Hornby they had the colour bulb start kit on a clearance for $150. But it was an older model kit with the v.1 hue Bridge.. Not sure what the difference is between the two is...

But I had to have a really long think about which to get. 150 alone for the 3 colour bulbs would've been worth it!

Decided the white ambiance kit with the switch was a better kit to get myself started with.. Am using in the bedroom and having the dimming switch is awesome!

This is mighty temping, if we can get Bunnings/Mitre10 to match.
I'm off sick at the moment and don't particularly feel like going out, but hopefully on Saturday or Sunday if I'm up to it I might drop in and see! Thanks for the heads up!

If you are getting colour bulbs, make sure they are Gen 3.
NZ seem to be a dumping ground for old stock. Look out for the "enhanced colours" sticker on the corner of the box for Gen 3.

Last time I looked at them at Noel Leeming they had the different generations at the same price with identical SKUs.

Better colour. Covered pretty extensively in the Hue thread but green performance I think. Look for gold printing on the side of the bulb for Gen 3 (IIRC).
Mr Google will help.

Disclaimer: I haven't bought any colour bulbs because I always considered them overpriced. I do have Hue strips, white bulbs, white downlights, motion sensors and wireless switches though.

The gen 3 colour bulbs apparently have better blue green and cyan colours than the gen 2 bulbs. I don't expect I'd use those colours much if at all.

I can see myself spending too much money on bulbs this weekend. It is a shame that the dimmer switch with bulb kit only comes with edison screw bulbs, because this is a good value kit, especially at $34.

I bought that same kit a while ago and just used the Edison bulb in a table lamp to provide room ambience.

Be aware the coloured bulbs aren't particularly bright. Especially when you are using them for white.

Hoping the new Xiaomi store has their bulbs when it opens next month.

Good to know, thanks! Would only get the colour bulbs for the living/entertainment areas really, can't see it being of use in the bedrooms? Well maybe the kids room.

Wow, yes that is good value for that kit, it's cheaper than just getting the dimmer switch on its own!

I see browsing the NL site, they now have the Muscari architectural lights as well. At one stage I even considered importing some of these but went with aphelion downlights instead.
