The Philips Hue range is 30% off at Noel Leemings this weekend.

That puts the standard Hue white bulbs down to about $21.

Price match with Bunning/Mitre 10 to get another 15% and you are down to $18.00 for a Hue white bulb.

I'll be getting another 2-3 as I slowly replace my household bulbs with Hues.

Yeah, I loaded up on them yesterday (12x + a couple of switches) but I stupidly forgot to go to Bunnings to save even more... oh well great timing anyway as I wanted to roll out Hue in the main parts of the house...

I just picked up my Sony WH-1000XM3s from Noel Leeming yesterday though ...

I guess I'll be doing more Black Friday shopping today. My wallet is crying.

Might pay to check prices at Bunnings. Some of their hue range is priced a few cents below NL. I went with Mitre 10 who hadn't lowered their prices, and price matched with 15% extra off. Picked up 2 dimmers, 2 ambience white bulbs, and one regular white bulb, for about $130. Would have bought some colour bulbs too ($57ea) but they had no bayonets in stock.

I've seen these things around for a while - what is the real-world advantage to them? I'm not particularly interested in having lights change colours or dim, or having them turn off automatically, and as I work from home (and am consequently here most of the time), the security aspect is not that much of a big deal.

I'm genuinely interested to hear what this sort of thing can provide.

I have mine set up with HomeKit. Whenever I approach my house, certain lights come on automatically so it's lit up when I walk in.

When I leave the house, all of the lights turn off automatically (so there's no chance of leaving them on accidentally).

Also, I just say "Hey Siri, goodnight" and my HomePod turns off all of the lights except for the master bedroom, which gets dimmed and set to a nice soothing colour.

Does it work if you don't have a home assistant? Can I just use Siri on my iPhone or Google Assistant on my Android?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the Philips Hue Starter kit.

you can just use an app

We have got one smart light and in a family house it doesn't really work out that great. My wife just still switches it on and off with the physical button. The main advantage is that it stays on all night for the kids so i get it to change colour and brightness slowly at night till its just a glow at 11pm till 6am, then it brightens back up.

We actually just brought a bunch of those Phillips leds from the super market that have 3 brightness levels with quick on offs. We have these in all our lamps and its pretty much just as easy to use.

I just bought an Amazon Echo Plus and it came with a Hue bulb. https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/headphones-speakers-audio/echo/amazon-echo-plus-alexa-with-bonus-philips-hue-bulb-bayonet/344566/ - $119

Will try the bulb out in a floor lamp (which was already on a timer) and see how SWMBO likes it.

The Goodnight option to turn off all lights in nice.

I've got a Harmony Hub so "Movie Time" - dims lights, turns on TV sets it to teh correct inputs, sets up Amp etc..

I've never used geo-location via my phone, but should set that up for front hall light :)

Personally if you want to play I'd order a echo or google mini these Black Friday sales to play with as well. Should be about $NZ 50 delivered from the US via youshop.

The phone will work as a controller, but if your are going to pay for a hub and light bulb spend the extra $NZ 50 on a mini or echo to try. Throw in chromecast while you at it if you don't have one (or fire TV stick if amazon is your thing)
I can recommend the netflix and spotify integration with the google mini and chromecasts.

The alarms and timer also get used all the time on my mini.

Thanks for posting this.  Just got a great deal at Mitre 10 Mega in Petone.  They don't have any edison bulbs in stock (??!?!?) and no ETA for another order.  But they do have the dimmer kit with an edison bulb and dimmer switch.  After discounts that was only about $28 so I got two of them and a single bayonet bulb.  Paid $77 all up, would have been $150 otherwise!

I'm really keen to have the light in my toilet on very dim all night so that I don't get fully woken up by bright light when I go in there during the night.

Would the Philips Hue be suitable for this purpose? i.e., allow me to turn the light off and on at full brightness during the day, and leave it on at very low brightness during the night?

Unfortunately I can't put a night light in there as there is no nearby power socket.

Yep.  You can set different scenes in the Hue app, and if you have an iOS device it's also Homekit integrated so you can do geofencing and other automations.

Mitre 10 price matched Bunnings for the Starter colour kit, lightstrip, extra colour bulb and white ambiance bulb. The cashier spent 30-40 minutes on the phone with Bunnings trying to confirm all the prices but all was good in the end and I saved about $60 in total. Now to spend the evening setting everything up. I'm so excited!

That's intense.  I just showed the cashier the pages from the Noel Leeming website on my phone and was out of there in about 3 minutes.

Yeah it was nuts. The cashier wrote down each product code, SKU, barcode etc comparing them with the Bunnings prices on my phone then went to a phone and called up Bunnings for every single item I got. I've never had a price match situation this lengthy or difficult before. Really strange. But thankfully they matched everything in the end.
