This seems in incredibly poor taste of Ubisoft, with all considered of late...

I disagree. The company also pledged EU 500,000 for the reconstruction efforts. The company invested two years making a digital replica that some believe can even be used to help the reconstruction efforts because of its details.

I think you are on the wrong end here...

I was unaware of that freitasm. The trouble is though with these companies who make an open pledge, they will be seen as wanting good publicity as a result. They are already an enormous game studio, and I don't see why they needed to get free marketing from the pledge.

However the digital model is great if they make it public domain, and could also be used in VR for further reconstruction or appreciation purposes.

They aren't the largest company making the pledge, or the smallest. Lots of French companies - including oil, airlines - are doing the same. Publicity? Sure - part of the social part of being a business.

I wouldn't call it 'free' publicity. I see it as them trying to do a good thing. Do you not believe they deserve the goodwill? I think if they made the donation anonymously you'd probably be more upset thinking they donated nothing. It's all for a good cause, and are they getting a little something in return - yeah maybe. If they're getting more or less in return, I'm not sure, but I'd probably wager less. They're basically giving the game away free and suggesting you rather go make a donation yourself.

Anyway I see it as a good move and don't have any issue with it.

No I stand by my opinion that it's in poor taste. Sure they make great games, but that's not my point.

So you think the act of all these companies listed here, which so far are offering EU 900 million to rebuild the cathedral, is in poor taste?

Who would you like to see paying for the reconstruction? The French government alone (who owns the building)? The Catholic Church?

I disagree with any suggestion this is in poor taste.  The cathedral is a global treasure, I'd support a company putting their branding all over the spire for a year if it meant it could be rebuilt successfully.

I can't see how it's in poor taste. Thanks to the OP. I have added it to my queue. I am a big AC Fan, I have played most of them and have 2 partially complete.

No I never said that at all, and I have not read the list as I have better things to do with my time. The EU 900 Million is really great to hear about, but that doesn't change the fact that they don't need to be listed donors if they don't want to be. Some of the donations will no doubt be from private sources or wealthy trusts, organisations or individuals also which is something to consider too.

I respectfully disagree with your position, and while I think limited corporate assistance and sponsorship is ethically acceptable for a lot of situations, don't see it as particularly good when it comes to monuments of international religious significance. This is a place of worship first and foremost not just a monument to superb architecture or artwork, nor a symbol of capital despite the huge costs and many years it took to build initially.

The building belongs to the French government (as other 70 or so church buildings around Paris). The Catholic church is just a beneficiary and use the buildings but it is not theirs. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So I think the whole "religious" argument is out now.

I was playing this way back on release and my father nonchalantly commented that I should go see it in person vs climbing it in a game. Looks like I wont be able to for a while, but at least the work the Ubisoft development team did may help in the restoration efforts.
