I had a quick look, as I'm after a laptop for my Mum. The Lenovo E520 which is a little cheaper not on sale, with very similar specifications to the Dell Inspiron 5000. I know the Lenovo has good build quality. Anyone have an opinion on which is better?

My two touch screen Lenovo laptops all had touch screen problem, one only had two months, otherwise all fine.

I'd go lenovo looking at that. Which is better - i don't know. The only Dell I would consider in comparison to the Lenovo is the Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1. The Dells have the updated 8th Gen Intels while the Lenovos are all stuck in original 8th Gen but I believe the difference is minimal for the end user.

Btw the Lenovo IS on sale, normal price $2099 according to your link

I did wonder if the Dell would be 1080, but it looks like both it and the Lenovo are.

On the thread on the computer for your mother, I recall talk that higher resolution can be wasted for those with poor sight, given they'll often set the screen to magnify - personally, I think it's still worth getting a 1080 screen, particularly if the device is going to be used for VOD etc - Netflix at 768 aint the same, given the short viewing distance!

it's not about what your eye can or can't see

many apps and webpages are designed such that if you have a less than 1080p screen the stuff appears funny as it thinks you have a very small screen and will arrange the page as such, and it doesn't look how it's supposed to look. but ymmv
