Another happy owner of these headphones.
FWIW, these are the earphones not the popular headphones.
I have the previous generation model (xm3), but they don't stick in my ears that well. I've tried different tips, including the recommended third party ones from amazon. They're not terrible, but, after a few minutes (if i am moving around) they slowly slip out of my ears... sitting still is fine.
Whereas, the similar jabra elite wireless earbuds fit perfectly for me and never fall out. The sonys seem to rely more on eartip friction only, rather than making use of the internal ear geometry to assist with supporting the weight. (which the jabras do well).
Unfortunately you can't test them first. I'm just unlucky with my ear shape i guess.

I agree about the big hassle of not being able to confirm fit before purchasing, but equally I would say it's risky to assume one model won't fit well based on the experience of the previous version (or the other way around).
The XM4 and XM3 do have quite different designs, plus the newer model is a bit smaller (it needed to be!) - I've also read this: "Both the WF-1000XM4 and the WF-1000XM3 sit differently in your ear. The former rest more snugly in your ear opening, while there's more earbud outside your ear with the latter. " This is pretty clear in images of the two models:
I experienced a similar problem to you when changing from the first gen of Galaxy Buds to the Buds Pro; I knew it was a risk based on reviews I'd read, and this was surely the case - the Pros are so much more substantial and have a big lumpy bit where the other buds are flat (coming up from the tips), which simply doesn't conform with my ear shape! The end result was major discomfort and falling out (the standard buds had neither of these problems.) Luckily, for me the memory foam tips I bought off AliExpress means they now never fall out, but comfort is still not great. If only they made cheap disposable dummy versions of buds that could be tried out before purchasing.

I think you're right, the XM4's look like they might be a better fit.
At least, googling, plenty of people had issues with XM3's, while there don't seem to be any complaints at all about the XM4 .
I wonder if this are ok to sleep in? Trying to compare it with the Bose Sleepbuds for its noise cancelling feature as the Bose one is very limited for its price.
thanks for this! just purchased one.
i almost purchased this yesterday at full price! only got distracted by my little bubba and never got around to completing the purchase.
Here's another side-by-side comparison, in case anyone else is interested: 🙂
