$100 to stream all 2019 RWC live on Spark vs $328 for a minimum 6-month term contract to Sky sports package.

Just imagine if you signed up for six months if the ABs got knocked out in the pool stages!

...then you'd still have Super Rugby/NPC, the other All Blacks games that year and all the other sports coverage from Sky? I'm struggling to think of a serious sports fan who would sign up for solely the RWC but not watch Super Rugby or the other All Blacks game and still see that as better value tbh.

You were never going to get $54.81/month including RWC. If Sky had won the RWC rights then the price drop would never have happened. Given the 6 month minimum Sky contract, the expected cost of Sky+Spark is better than the old Sky bundle including RWC.

A time-poor geek is hardly a geek at all

Long bow to draw. The price drop was clearly decided prior to 1 March given the absence of the usual package information in the Skywatch (and that goes to print days before delivery).
And the announcement that Sky was not the preferred bidder for the RWC would have happened at the earliest possible time under continuous disclosure rules. The risk of potential information asymmetry and it's implications for a listed entity would mean that Sky wouldn't have the opportunity to sit on the information and make pricing decisions.

Prime Ministerial intervention, discussion in the Australian Parliament.

I heard someone on ZB talking about this this morning (from Australia).

Sounds like Optus greatly underestimated the number of people who would be using the service (also consider, all of Australia's matches are broadcast FTA).

He was saying Optus are a comparatively small ISP (I thought they were one of the big ones) and they just didn't have the capacity.

They have shut down the streaming for 48 hours to fix it. SBS is broadcasting the matches for the next 48 hours in lieu of the streaming.

Hopefully, the bosses at Spark are watching this closely. Football isn't the national sport over in Australia - imagine if it happened for the Rugby here next year.

IMO, Spark will have the capacity. Hopefully they get the device choices right and a good UI (and not too expensive - the football in Aus was $15 for the tournament, which I suspect is less than we will have to pay Spark for the RWC here).

Optus have been streaming live EPL for a few years - and are the 2nd largest operator in Australia. Livesport is not a new prospect for the company. And as you say, this isnt the Australia matches, only the early pool play. The issue hasnt been for the majority of streamers but there have been issues for some.

Spark doesnt even have a livestreaming platform. It couldnt even try to stream the Under20's RWC. A recipe for disaster.... Imagine if it could deliver for 80% of its RWC customers but the other 20% are stuck with poor quality? Would the PM intervene here? For non-NZ matches?

I'm sure they'll consider that platform amongst others. The biggest issues are:

- that Optus is not a beginner in this space (Spark is)

- OptusSport is a well developed platform delivering livesport to a wide range of platforms and devices (Spark has not yet decided on its supplier or built its platform)

- Optus underestimated the demand from its customers (and wont say how many new signups have occurred). Spark has no idea the avalanche demand it might get from RWC - it has seen the SkyGo (inhouse) and FanPass (third-party, off the shelf) issues that Sky has experienced.

Instead TVNZ broadcast the games - and livestreaming via Duke had absolutely ZERO to do with Spark despite Spark winning/owning the rights. Odd, no?

Naturally I find it odd that the NBR - long time Spark supporter - is completely silent on the issues occurring in Australia.

And the Spark mouthpiece - The SpinOff - is also silent.

If it were a paytv provider that couldnt deliver FIFA to the masses - they'd both be crowing it from the rooftops.

I'm thinking TVNZ will be happy to broadcast matches to the country when Spark fails. Just like SBS is happy to fulfil that role for Optus.

And I love your optimism about TVNZ and the ComGames. Did you know they hit a record for number of simultaneous streams for an event? It was a whopping 7,000 for the netball.

And a whole 175,000 households watched the Games online at some stage. Thats a real test of a platform - if there is no one testing the capacity of the platform its easy to be "consistent and reliable"

Chorus definitely have the bandwidth to handle the streams. They peaked at 1.4 Tb/s in April. My big concern is with non-Spark customers. Spark does not having open peering at the various IXes in New Zealand, so ISP are going to need to acquire enough peering bandwidth with Spark to meet their customers demands (compared to say Netflix which does peer at various IX around the country).
