And both NZ and India are down top players so its a fair fight

India, at home, on a track they haven't lost in 70 matches, a draw, especially an easy draw is a great result.

Can always happen, but they seem to be cruising (touch wood) The commentators going on about whats needed to win, but NZ are not playing to win. 2 test series, India always on top, a draw means we move to 2nd test with the learning's.

Agree. If they can draw this match there is a chance for them to win the 2nd Test and be the 1st NZ team to beat India at their home in any format of the game.

Yep, a loss here by going for an unlikely win would be a huge negative. Innings is 2 per over, batters are about 3, both are too low for a win. Both sides are down players, but we bat deep, virtually only one tail ender.

That partnership was doing so well. That was definitely a brain fade moment.

A superb result. It’s incredibly difficult not to be beaten in India batting second. The track was terrible to say the least.

Yes it was, Blundell was unlucky and Young wasn't out, so the result was a bit better than it was when light ended play. Ravindra is a find. Patel can defend. As Ashwin said in the post match, the days are over of the "tail"

Congrats to NZ on a draw that looked gone for all money, even though they could have won the match themselves with a bit more positive intent with the bat, less terrible umpiring and having a 3rd bowler who can take wickets.

Win a series that is yep. I think that was their plan from the get go, but nearly faded with not having enough wicket takers in the team. Both Southee and Jamo proved you can take wickets on any pitch if you are good enough. What NZ needed was  a 3rd wicket taker to spread the load. Both innings should have seen Ind all out for sub 200 and NZ could have potentially won.

I dont think going the so called "normal" route of 3 spinners was a good on. Especially not when you have somebody like Wagner who is our #1 bowler at taking wickets on any surface. Fastest left hand bowler to 200 test wickets and 2nd fastest kiwi to 100, only 1 behind Hadlee (admittedly Hadlee took a while to settle on line and length consistency, could have been a sub 20 bowler otherwise, still the best of all time).

Its not a good look chosing to play home umpires only instead of the ICC who have the money to dedicate resources to all way tests at the moment to fund 1 non home team umpire. Including their MIQ or whatever is required.

Will Young was so obviously not out that a high school player could have umpired that with the correct decision. Not over exaggerating. Ashwin is a thawn in the side of all umpires,

Outside that, Young's decision to move from a #3 batsman to focus on Opening has finally paid off. He is exactly the opener NZ have needed for so long. It will require a team shuffle, I think Taylor needs to replace Nicholls for the final season at home before he retires. So Conway to 4, Taylor to 5. Will Young was one of only a few players getting really far down the pitch with his stride to negate the spinners length making it easier to play and making an umpires decision too hard to call Out "in theory". Ashwin had been warned by umpires for crossing the Ump's line of sight.

If NZ can just get another wicket taker in the team, fix their collapses by being more positive we have a very good chance of a series win, with Young showing he can see off the new ball consistently, which is his first job. Just target 3rpo, that way whatever happens they have 100 more runs each innings. Then with Young now helping Latham, we should have a solid platform.

Will be interesting to see what Mumbai looks like this time around.

I doubt a win in the final innings was ever on the cards. More intent means losing more wickets. I "think" the required RR was already close to 4, and the match never got close to that. The outside chance was going near wicketless till the last session AND having a 3 RR, never happen. A draw is good points, India was on top all through the match, go for a draw and a series win is still on the table

When Conway comes back I reckon he should be batting at No 4 and Young to open the batting. For the No 5 position it should be Taylor or Nicholls.

With this draw there is a chance to win the second test. Toss will be key and I assume almost all pitches in test matches in India will be a bat first scenario. Win the toss and win the game.

Is it time for the "should Ross be replaced" thread? He looked all at sea to me. Maybe better suited to other types of tracks? The concern is he holds back up and comers who are the future

If Latham, Young, Williamson and Conway occupy 1-4 in the batting order who is the next best after Taylor or Nicholls in Domestic cricket. I can’t think of any names who could fill the No 5 position after Taylor or Nicholls.
