Dochart:Did they ever talk about what pitch around the world is similar to the Mount?

Commentary talked about it being favorable to Bang, they didnt get the green they were expecting. Just a batsmans paradise after day 1. outside it dying off for those batting last, which was NZ. I think to focus on it though would be looking to make exscuses given NZ got the worst of it a both ends of the test. But no doubt it wasnt the typical NZ type pitch you would expect. NZ should still have scored 500 on it given they made it through day 1, no excuses.

And NZ still had enough chances to have them 7 down for 150 odd. Not reviewing an absolute plum lbw with 3 up our sleave imo was the catalyst from Tom and it just got worse from there.

Complacent, where Bang young team largely knew no different so had no fear and outside each chance NZ missed, they showed the batting intent NZ didnt.

NZ have almost over corrected the batting intent in this test on day 1 scoring at 4rpo, although imo that is how you win tests, score fast and score big. If NZ declare some time around tea tomorrow, there will still be enough grass to hold the cutters to move the ball off the deck, which somebody like KJ should exploit given the bounce. His bouncer off a good length is perfect on this pitch. He has to be on for a 5fa.

Another factor is how Bangers batted last game, smashed us. if they bat less than that but pretty well, you will not see a won match if both teams bat well.

I wasnt refering to edges or lucky chances, NZ didnt take actual wickets on offer, that is what cost them, they were complacent. Im near certain NZ bowlers will be producing a far more clinical exhibition. Bangers didnt smash us as such, they just kept scoring at a moderate rate in between NZ not taking wickets on offer. They wont keep scoring if NZ demolish them with ball, which is what NZ is known for in NZ.

Very different game, very different intent from NZ is what Im expecting.

What are you expecting from NZ? dont sit on the fence :-), do you think Bangers are going to SMASH NZ?

Anyone know why Joy from Bangladesh isn’t playing this test match? Is he injured?

Yep, he wouldnt have batted in their final innings either had we done a little better. I dont know if it was broken finger or split webbing, but he had 2 fingers splinted together with a sling holding his arm up.

My prediction was if NZ won the toss and bowled they would win the test within 3 days, that went out the door with losing the toss, but it could be back on the cards now with NZ scoring so quickly, 500-550 and hour after lunch and plenty of zip and grip left in this pitch, 120 overs could be enough to bowl 20 wickets. This is shaping up more how NZ should have been placed in the first test, although with that wicket being a batsmans paradise for 3 days I doubt a result would have occurred for NZ.

Keep in mind, just to correct an earlier post, this is not a 3 test series, its 2 only. Best NZ can do and prob will do is draw it. More important is the 12 points with Ind dropping a match in SA, if NZ can finish off SA and then win the away games, they are still within a chance. WIll be between Aus, NZ and Ind again I think for the WTC.

I would love for NZ to win against Aus in a World Test Championship final but we have a habit of losing to Australia in finals.

Im not expecting every gane to be a NZ win on day 3................. Read that a bit lately.

"NZ didnt take actual wickets on offer, that is what cost them" Why didnt they? They are a professional sports team.

Again why didnt they? "very different intent from NZ is what Im expecting"

Im not sitting on any fence. I expect Bangers to bat well, as given they smashed us in all disciplines I dont see that as a one off. If it was NZ was an abysmal one off also.

No I dont see Bangers smashing NZ, I see them as being competitive. What they do have is being 1 up. They will play for a draw, as thats a win in this 3 test series.

Me too. But I would like a 3 test series here and also there, sorta like an annual Bledisloe Cup. Or a 5 test series, alternate between 2 here 3 there.

Mostly I want NZ to play more top tier nations

You would think that since we are so close to Australia that we would be able to have annual Tests, ODI’s and T20i’s yearly with them. I’m not sure why we can’t do this.

2 test series

I suspect Tom feels largely responsible for that first test, both failing with the bat and making some key mistakes as captain. This innings is one of determination and intent and I think he is partially a bit angry/determined.

That was a really dumb call from Latham to call Conway through. You dont take those kinds of runs in t20 often. He clearly thought he hit it softer than he did. Conway looked miffed and a bit dirty. But hes now in an elite group of 5 players, including Bradman, who have made 600+ in their first 5 tests.

It was the only way Ross was going to get a bat anyway. Now Tom scores his double. He will prob declare on his 3rd, but I expect NZ to put the foot down soon, given the expeted weather day 4 and 5. NZ can win on this pitch with 500 on the board. I expect the bowling/fielding to be far more clinical this time around.

Because Australian and Indian TV companies do not want annual tests between NZ and Australia. The companies want 1 ashes and 2 India series in a 4 year cycle.

So you may get yearly T20s but that will start to bore after a while especially if the games are not close. I don't know the exact figure but there normally isn't that many close T20 games and unlike ODIs teams tend to be out of contention quicker.

Edit: As per Jas above

We should do once Covid gets more under control. The Chap-Hadlee series was meant to be an annual ODI fixture, but got messed around with due to various reasons last decade. The top of the wiki explains Chappell–Hadlee Trophy - Wikipedia

But I hope to see morel test series, perhaps every 3 years. Especially with NZ being WTC's and only having just slipped from ICC #1 ranking due to the Ind test series loss (and now the loss to Bang). I suspect Warner will retire within a couple of years from Tests and then if Steve Smith starts slipping form he will want to retire before his amazing avg is diluted to normality. Without those 2 and others soon to retire, I can see Aus's golden 4 decades of cricket having a lull, they dropped dramatically to 5th when Smith and Warner were suspended for cheating.

So that may have them wanting to play us more often, although Im hoping that happens soon anyway given we should remain within the top 3 for another 5-7 years minimum. (provided we start getting the likes of Ben Sears and other young gun bowlers being part of the culture the team now has).

As I said the other day and Baz and Flem were mentioning this morning, this last 7 years of cricket and especially the last 4-5 have given NZ a very healthy grass roots level of cricket and cricket in NZ is very healthy. It is no longer a sport for just a few and the rest just watch it on TV in summer, its played by women semi professionally and with so much success Im sure the number of youth players and quality must have gone up, wanting to be the next Baz Mccullum or Kane Williamson.

I think Covid would have had a part to play, given NZ had been away touring for a long time so a late summer, have SA and Netherlands to fit in. I guess also the thinking being NZ has won every match in recent years with the bottom ranked teams, playing 2 test series.

Good to see Ross bat positively, although Id like to have seen Conway still out there and about now he would have started putting the foot down. In saying that, NZ will want to get some of this Green as its starting to burn off. Some uneven bounce starting now too. So I think 500-550 with suspect weather day 4 and 5, they will want part of today and all of tomorrow, so ~120 overs to bowl at Bang (assuming they can bowl them out before the follow on mark).

Phoar that ball to Latham took off, off the Seam. If KJ gets into this, he is going to a handful across the lefties.

Its like turf almost lifted there!

Oh Nicholls.......

Well NZ might be forced to bowl just before tea. But shouldnt change them putting the foot down, still need the 500 and reasonably quick.
