Disappointing Day 3. Mitchell and Blundell went out for good balls, thats ok. Jamieson out early no surprise, Patel is a true tai lender, thats ok, but DeGrandhomme was a waste. Even if he got a quick 20 then went out, thats 6 to 10 overs at the English tail to bowl at. Wasted.

As for NZ, the way the match has played out, ENG has been in the doldrums for some time, brought back two star bowlers that weren't good enough, as they are past their use by date. And our batting effort was left to 5 and 6 getting a 180 run partnership to keep us n the game. Not great at all unfortunately.

Needed to get at least 350-400 run lead to be safe.

Im just over the selectors not putting in the obvious changes needed for Wicket Keeper and to get rid of having the 2 all rounders (3 inc KJ). Mitchell or CDGH need to go in favour of giving somebody like Glenn Phillips another go.

We need to stick to who has performed in our FC, not keep picking the old guard. Once Taylor and Watling left, we didnt replace BJ with our WK scoring the most runs, we just used Blundell, who was only there as replacement for Will Young while he was injured. One could say we replaced taylor with Conway, but really we do not need an extra bowler, especially when someone like Phillips bowls some of the best spin in NZ which gives us fast change of end options.

Pick the 7 best batsmen including keeper, one part time bowler (not an all rounder) then the 4 best bowlers inc KJ who can bat a lot better than he is doing.

They havnt beaten us in a series for 4 in a row, this will be the 5th but looks like they may end the run.

This should be the XI for the 2nd test. I’m really impress with Mitchell so far in tests. So far the 10 tests he played he averages around 43 with the bat but hasn’t bowled much in test level so far. It will be a tough decision whether to stick with Mitchell or replace him with Nicholls. If Phillips was included in the test squad he could bat at 6 and also provide part time spin as well.

1. Latham
2. Young
3. Conway
4. Williamson
5. Mitchell/Nicholls
6. M Bracewell (part-time spin)
7. Blundell/Fletcher (wk)
8. Jamieson
9. Southee
10. Wagner
11. Boult

I have no idea whats wrong, but what I do see is a high level of inconsistency. Bangers came here, in our conditions and showed us up. We go to UK to play a team thats been in the doldrums for a good while, they are also down players, need to bring back old star bowlers that have been left out, and we still lose. Our top 4 batters are world class, failed. Lucky two players who arent guaranteed picks got a almost 200 partnership. Otherwise its a whopping. Maybe next game 3 of the top 4 go well, so that everyone else fails, thats the trend. We seem to choke, play not to lose, we dont often play positive.

We were playing consistently good for ages because we batted well in partnerships & bowled well in pairs to keep good pressure on the other sides batsmen -  this year we've been dreadful, too many individuals have lacked focus/concentration, especially our top 4 or 5 batsmen, which has cost us big time... like any team sport each individual has to execute their role well, allowing your team to perform at it's best.

Warriors are in a class of their own as absolute rubbish, Just unbelievable how badly we're playing this year, we are making a pretty average England team look great.

Agree, both are in the same class. Have the talent but cannot deliver. With a top 5 failing (apart from Latham's 75) and relying on Blundell and Mitchell) it could have been even worse. Ups to B+M, awesome.

Yeah, our scores would be really abysmal if it wasn't for those Mitchell/Blundell partnerships.

Shows you how shocking our top 5 batsmen were... Mitchell & Blundell scored 50% of our runs in the series.

I think they should switch Young and Conway around. Conway was opening fine in the 2021 series in England but at No 4 this time didn’t perform as usual. Conway has perform better opening.

Who should be our top 7 going forward. This series Mitchell and Blundell have cemented their places for awhile. I feel like we should keep 1-7 as batters and 8-11 bowlers. I feel like this combination is the best but having one of the batters that can bowl part time spin if we are not playing in the subcontinent.

1. Latham
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Young/Nicholls
5. Mitchell (part-time medium pacer)
6. Cleaver(wk) or Phillips (part-time spin)
7. Blundell (wk)
8. Jamieson
9. Southee
10. Wagner
11. Boult

That's a pretty good team - could be a good option to switch Young & Conway around... reckon they need to improve their mindsets & shot selections first though, that goes for a few of the other top order batsmen too.

For me I prefer a specialist spinner to be in the 11, adds more balance to our bowling attack.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/300630429/plaudits-flow-for-brendon-mccullum-and-bazball-after-another-england-win

Interesting article. Why ENG dominated us and beat India.

To me, NZ is the complete opposite now. Cautious, worried, playing not to lose, etc. Our top 5 batters were dismal in ENG, yet they are our top 5 batters, so the issue isnt skill its between the ears

Bazza seems to have got ENG to be positive, happy, calm. I guarantee he's told them to have fun and play positive, doesn't matter if you go out

That's the end of test cricket for Trent Boult. I'm really sad to see him go, he's one of the absolute greats of NZ cricket. We're at the end of a golden era, it's been great but it's all but over.
