Im getting tired of reading about our win and blah blah. Both boats went off the foils, both due to sailing errors, so it could have gone either way. LR went down in light air, we went down in the middle of the course, and even though foil is smaller (bad), the gib was larger (good) and the wind was not as light (good), so while it wasnt bad luck they both went down, it was luck that we went down in a better place. But thats boring reading :-)

Was the reason for LR not being able to get on their foils and recover boat, weather, or sailor errors? I guess it's somewhat hard to know.

once they were beached sailors had nothing to do with it. the weather was not able to lift the boat - so it's both weather and boat design choices.

could they have stopped it from beaching ? well i don't know. if there were arrows on where the wind was and how strong the winds were at the point of beaching it might help us amateurs out.

this is what i think -

1. their weatherman did not tell them that there was absolutely no wind where they were heading and absolutely must not come off foils. the way they were sailing and if you listen to the mic they thought they could get back up. if they were right, when they got to the mark they were still miles ahead of TNZ and if they got back up they would still have won.

2. could they have saved it - i'm not sure. maybe once they came off there was nothing they could do.

so blame their weatherman whoever it was. the AC official commentator warned everybody  that there was a very real risk of Prada coming off foils where they did and warned that there was no wind to get them back up where the were struggling, and predicted this when Prada was at the other mark at the other end.

Course C today if we get underway. Shifty winds so thats the course where sailing skills are crucial, picking the winds. Passing lanes etc.

Everyone knew the wind was light up there, most of all LR who were there and looking. They could have gone wide to maintain speed but thats slow, so they took a turn they can get away with, just got it wrong. Like any racing sports, you do live on the edge, well winners do.

I have to concede that LRPP is better at pointing high into the wind which can give them a tactical advantage and some VMG wins.

Didn't seem to be that that way yesterday.

There is definitely a small window off the line where ETNZ has some serious gas.

They spat out some figures yesterday. Think they mentioned optimal turn speed is 23kts+. Minimal 'pop' speed to get up is between 14-18 depending on setup. And to achieve that you need a long run of constant-ish 7kt blow to start out running it.

From Stuff:

Murray said officials had been going over repeated penalties awarded against Luna Rossa on Monday for sailing well outside the course in a bid to find wind to get it foiling, after becoming almost becalmed.

“The penalties probably were on the generous side of not disqualifying (the Italians) for going out that distance,” he said.

The umpires would be letting the teams know for the next races, that “boundaries are boundaries”, he said.

If they'd managed to salvage a win from using that tactic, things could have possibly gotten a bit ugly / litigious - AC style.

And the somewhat remarkable sight of TNZs "VMG" ticker whizzing up negative numbers as they were trying to get the boat back up on foils by heading the wrong way - back up the course.

at this level of competition, i seriously doubt any team would need a weatherman to tell them they "must not come off foils". they'd all be foiling from start to finish if possible at all.

my guess is that they took a calculated risk that didn't quite swing their way. but i know jack about sailing, so... 😝

So if current weather observations I'm looking at are correct then the westerly has just arrived, there's about 8+ knots of wind, that should strengthen slightly and shift more SW over the next 4 hours.

Racing should be on time, they should be able to complete both.

We could see the match point race today.

I'm in the difficult position of enjoying the racing happy for a few days more, but wanting ETNZ to wrap this up before Jimmy finds something tricky to beat us with :)
