Is it just me or the news coverage of this entire event is shocking? I just typed in Spithill Interview to try and find the above interview that @mattwnz was referring to. I cant even find any basic info that isnt 10 days old. The heck?

I found the coverage on the Herald and Stuff pretty poor from a 'what happened'point of view. They both but up opinion pieces quickly in the mornings, but rarely actually said who won what race, how much lead etc.

It is poor in NZ as the nz media just has click bait sized bites of information to get multiple Clicks. You have to get the coverage from overseas sources. There entire interview is on YouTube, an hour long press event but worth watching https://youtu.be/8xIWpnsrurc

Some of Dalton's jokes and quips were funny to watch.

Wonder if there will be a ticker tape parade in Wellington this time. I went to the last one in the 90s when we last won it off the US.

Actually to give Stuff their due, they had very good live blow by blow (tack by tack?) coverage during each race, but it doesn't seem to be locatable anywhere afterwards. The guy that was providing the online commentary was very good - well from the point of view of a non-sailor anyway.

Spithill was surprisingly gracious in defeat

Dalton on the other hand seems like a bitter old man despite the win

Quite enjoyed this format, I suspect that they'll return to the boring monohull racing which is unfortunate

Don't know too many people who would be reading the coverage. Most people will be either watching it live, or on the radio with Peter Montgomery who was the voice of the Americas cup. Disappointing they didn't have him calling the final on tv . Wonder if he will still be doing it in 3-4 years time for the nz americas cup

I found the segments between races to be very informative. There were segments on foiling, apparent wind angles, and on the different roles on the boat. And I thought the realtime data on each boat and the discussions/speculation on the foils to be quite interesting and insightful.

I'm not really a Stuff fanboy (in fact most of things they publish these days don't qualify as actual news in my opinion), but this article is actually a very good explanation of how their setup works

Loved it ..... Loved it .... LOVED IT!

I've been watching the coverage through BT Sports since it started and have been a little bemused at Paul Cayard's comments and obvious growing disgust that the Cup may be coming back to NZ. This comment in Stuff especially made me smile:-

America's Cup veteran Paul Cayard has questioned the match-racing skills of Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling ............... (dated 12 days ago).

Well done guys. Now lets move on to Mono Hull foilers in choppier seas and get back to real sailing skills

Are they wanting mono hulls next time? A foiling mono hull looks nice, but they aren't as pretty as the cats. There is significant cost with big mono hull. I don't have a problem with the current boats, as they look so hi tech compared to mono hulls, and more formula one like. But they are dangerous and difficult to sail, especially had higher wind speeds and choppy seas, like they will likely have in Auckland. I think the innovation of the leg pedal grinders looks to have been a major difference due to being able to keep the hydraulic pressure up when they needed it, and the old hand grinders look so dated now. Using legs also means they can do other things with their hands. With Oracle, you could see that the pressure gradually goes down, as they can't create enough hydalic pressure, to sustain it throughout the race.

I'd be happy if they took it back to rules where the challenger had to sail to the race venue using the hull they were going to race with.

I'd make sure that it was sailed at a venue where races were started in anything below storm-force winds, abandoned only when crew were at risk of starvation.

Force the contenders - and especially the zillionnaire sponsors - to be accommodated on the boat 24/7 for the duration of the event.

Then you'd have an interesting yacht race.

1885–1887: The NYYC Rule

The Deed of Gift was amended in 1881 to require that challenges be accepted only from yacht clubs on the sea and that challenger yachts must sail to the venue on their own hull.

This meant that overseas competitors had to build heavyweight ocean-going yachts which were much slower than locally built lightweight yachts designed for New York weather conditions.

I suspect they were joking :) But if you look at todays rules, the rules that they make are pretty heavily stacked towards the defenders. We went into the final, at -1, beucase Oracle had won the challengers round robin, so they were able to test their boat with the defenders, and benefit in the finals from that!. And even though we won the finals of the LV cup, we still didn't win any point for doing this, because those were the rules. Also the defenders got to use two boats, while TNZ were only were allowed one, so it was heavily stacked against the challenger IMO. When it was held in Auckland last time, I don't think it was ever that heavily stacked towards the challenger.

But if you look over the history of formula one you will see thousands of little improvements they made that trickled down to car manufactures that make the cars we have today. Maybe boating is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
