Given the *abysmal* handling of the CWG2018 by TVNZ I would have very little faith that TVNZ will deliver the experience people are used to with Sky.

I have watched every single game of the last RWC including all pool matches between all countries competing. I do this by fast forwarding stoppages and parts of the game, however, with streaming this is less suitable as the FFWD and RWD works differently.

I will be interested to see if they provide coverage of every single game. Shame I'll need to pay $100 more than I already do, but I would still consider this reasonable value. I am going to say now I around $100 to end up being between $100-150.

I'd have much much preferred the more experienced provider get the coverage, they have proven track record. I wonder what will be catered for, for all the thousands and thousands of people who have no streaming capability?

This isn't a positive move in my opinion.

I note the lack of the word 'live' for all the FTA mentions too.

Much like the delayed coverage on Prime as it stood till now being 30mins-a half behind.

We need a subscriber tickertape to see if it starts falling off today in preparation.

From the media release (bold added for emphasis):

"TVNZ will screen seven Rugby World Cup 2019 matches live –  including the tournament’s opening match and the final – the same number offered free-to-air in 2015, and a yet to be confirmed number of delayed matches. Ads won’t run in live game time, said TVNZ. Details of these matches will be released in the coming months."

Huge opportunity here for Spark to offer a 4K HDR option here. What are our chances?

I am wondering if what they mean by this is the situation you had during the CWG coverage where the ads meant you missed actual game play? Infuriating was the situation where they would cut to ads during the squash and you'd come back and there had been 6 points scored you didn't get to see!

I would be very surprised if they played no ads.

Huge chance? For the %1?

Even if you have a suitable HDR 4K TV and the setup for it, what are the chances you ALSO have the bandwidth for it? I'd suggest maybe even less than 1% chance. Not sure what you want to see in 4K that you can't see in 1080i.

Being able to see individual hairs on a props legs as they go into the scrum isn't really a big advantage in my opinion.

depends, if the source isn't set for that there is no way that spark can offer it.

Well above 1% now. All you can buy now is 4k TV's, and you only need 100mbit UFB to be able to use 4k. From memory its a 16mbit stream.

Even substandard VDSL would be able to stream 4k.

Being hosted by japan, there will be a 4K capture. Pretty sure 30 ish Mb\s is good enough for 4K movie streaming so id say all vdsl and fibre connections will support a 4k HLG stream?

So sounds like for the whole tournament it will be about the same price as Fanpass or a month of Sky with sport, MySky and HD.

I have an Android phone, PS4, Microsoft Surface tablet and windows laptop so hopefully it's easy enough to get games on the TV with my existing equipment as would prefer to watch on a big screen. However I'm not a massive rugby fan so would only really be interested in England's games and the semis and final. So depending on pricing I may just pay for the England games that are not on TVNZ unless that would add up to more than the tournament pass. Hopefully On Demand is also provided for those who can't always watch live due to time difference or general life etc.

My interpretation also after the fiasco that is the haka adverts and recent CG2018 fiasco to distance from it.

ockel: A six week competition with the finals ad free on TV. At $100 for all the live pool matches (roughly a month) that sounds like Fanpass pricing too me. Hahahaha.

This from Consumer in 2015: "By far the cheapest option is Fan Pass, which costs $140 for 7 weeks. We tried Fan Pass during the Super Rugby season and found it reliable but with a few annoying quality issues when watching live. We tried it again during the second Bledisloe match this year and found similar issues. When we watched the Silver Ferns World Cup final, the picture was blocky and almost unwatchable at times."

Link here (which gives all the Sky RWC pricing options from 2015).

Not sure about you, but I'll pick modern HD streaming over "blocky and unwatchable at times" any day.

... and at a price likely to be less than Fan Pass four years ago.

I barely care about rugby but I would strongly consider paying for Spark's offering if they had a 4k/50 option. Not sure if you've ever seen sports filmed in that definition (if you have a 4k TV, download some demo reels - there is a Samsung soccer one that is widely available) but the jump in quality is very noticeable indeed. It's actually breathtaking.

Seems like this would be an excellent way for Spark to really capitalise on their investment by offering something that Sky can't. Otherwise, due to Sky's long experience in this kind of broadcasting, it's pretty much inevitable that Spark's option is going to be inferior to what people are used to.

However the most important thing for Spark by far is that they absolutely nail the streaming performance. Matches ruined by "buffering" will have people jumping back into Sky's arms in a heartbeat.

Did you watch any CWG online? I watched a fair bit. It was decent but pretty much the same as above. Also did they test it more recently? The platform has matured. I watched 2 games last week and didn't have a single issue. I had issues when it was first released.

If you check back you'll see plenty of people with issues on NF when they first went to market.
