I'm a little behind, but the last one I watched there were a few lead changes which was fun. As the boats all differ, you would expect the pecking order to sort itself out. But as the races are only 25 minutes, that still leaves opportunities. And over the course of these races, fine tuning will compress the field a little

The French didn’t have the capability to develop their own boat - so they bought a complete package from ETNZ. My understanding is that the French and Kiwi boats are identical in terms of hull, equipment, systems etc. When we race them the result is purely down to skill - effectively a true one-class race.

I was aware that, to reduce design and testing costs of the AC75 class, all boats’ foil controlling systems are manufactured by ETNZ. I thought they made the foils too but now see that all foil arms are manufactured by INEOS’s builder, Persico Marine.

I also just saw this on the Wikipedia AC75 page - thought it was interesting and funny:

Following the release of the canting hydrofoil design in 2017, Brazilian shipwright Manoel Chaves contacted ETNZ to inform them that he held a patent for the proposed design. Team New Zealand apparently ignored correspondence from Chaves' patent attorneys for over two years before simply dismissing the allegations. ETNZ defended themselves with the statement "every good idea has 1000 fathers".

Ah yes, the 'slutty idea' legal defence.

The foils had a 'use this' or a 'diy, but dont exceed these parameters' option. Among the pods and visibility it seems. Only one team went for a visible cockpit window over sticking ya head up.

There's a video about with AM running with different foils each side and seeing the difference. One was far less stable but lightning fast.

It seems video shots are limited now since they did away with chase boat refs in favour of geofencing. No need to keep an eye on them anymore so the course is clean and left to boundary boats and helo shots.

I did notice instead of trace paths they now have estimated ghost paths ahead.

About 5pm yesterday I watched the races. It showed the lightning strike race that Emirates NZ was in. Cool.

This morning before work I watched the overnight recording at 12am, day 6, it was the same races. Did Three mess it up? Don't want to Google to check, as I don't want to see the results

Spoilt my breakfast lol

Yeah my recording failed, so i had a quick look at the live tv 3 feed and it seemed to be a repeat.  It does look like nothing happened overnight.

I was wondering the same - no info on-screen to say racing was delayed or anything - just repeats of yesterday.

No racing overnight, apparently. So possibly just a replay.

Too stormy overnight - double races tonight.

I've been watching YouTube in the mornings - coverage is OK. They will have work-ons and be bringing our more graphics etc. as the series goes on (happens every cup cycle).

Unfortunately, they went with McIvor again - he was pretty average in the 2021 coverage and hasn't got any better in this. Glenn Ashby and Shirley Robertson are great though.

I hope ETNZ has some nice tricks still in the shed.

SirHumphreyAppleby:

I have zero interest in cats and while foiling monohulls are interesting, it's not sailing. The crew are now just driving similar machines around a course. I stopped watching the car racing in Australia when they effectively banned Nissan from the competition, as it was no longer about innovation, but about conforming to a specific class/design.

The biggest issue I have is with having a challenger lined up. IIRC, the challenger sets the type of boats that will be used (and I believe there is a fixed timeframe as well). Currently, the whole thing is set up to maintain control of the class/design and programme, all for commercial gain.

The Challenger of Record (COR) works with the Defender to set the rules for the next cup regatta. Together they will have adjusted the class rule for the boats (this time they are lighter with less crew, foils can be bigger, no backstay on the mast....). If the COR and Defender cannot agree, then the cup can be raced for in a Deed of Gift match (which is what that big boat that's in the Viaduct was built for) between the challenger and defender.

Some close racing overnight!

Really enjoyed the races this morning over my breakfast, as they were changing leads and rounding markers with just metres in it.
Also - small mistakes matter - a quick drop off the foils or a brief encounter with the course boundary and it's quite a big hurdle to overcome.

So today's graphical changes seems to be thanks To the previous copyright wars of 2018?

Virtualeye certainly appears to have no mention of links at all anymore (the nz company that had a spat with coutts previously)

And now it's french IT co Capgemini plasting their name everywhere, and their product windsightIQ, using lidar and data for realtime wind.

I had seen the odd trail crumbs of old, but it appears to be in playbacks only

So perhaps that's why the cool stuff is still missing. Animation research may have patents the new lot can't use.

Yes, it was great. Some teams including NZ and UK used smaller gybs. Im not a sailing guy but a fan. Smaller Gybs give a gain one way, and a loss the other. A LOT like Formula 1, where you can use a lower wing to gain speed on the straights, but you suffer on the turns. Louis Vitton you gain downwind and lose upwind (or vice versa) Like all top tier sports its fine margins. INEOS sailed at max performance, no issues. All teams will learn, it depends who learns the most and sails the best.

The key is to avoid inter webs before watching it!! Given the times, I rarely watch sport live, so its recorded

I get that. End of the day its a race, thats all that matters (to me). There is enough back end info to satisfy me. Yes, the disturbed air graphic would be good
