Messi rolling back the years and scoring a hattrick, proving that he is almost as talented as Eli Just.

Big game for England tomorrow morning...

I always thought CR7 is the goat but this WC is going to show me it's Messi.

I don't expect CR7 to do anything useful other than complain to the ref he should get a penalty.

Iran is higher in the world rankings than Egypt so if we play as well as we did against Iran we may get a win there.
Belgium is a lot tougher though.

just watched an interview with the iranians and they said they were forced to fly into the city on the day and they were already exhausted after the immigration and customs ordeal.

madness.

interestingly i also saw some protests around the world inc NZ and they said the players do not represent Iran??

let's hope the footy would speak for itself.

I hope I don't jinx the footy but normally WC matches are boring where nobody wants to lose.

Batman:

I am absolutely astounded by the quality of the footy displayed in this year's WC. worth every NZD spent on the TVNZ WC pass.

I hope I don't jinx the footy but normally WC matches are boring where nobody wants to lose.

But this time round everybody wants to score.

So happy for NZ and Iran. I didn't realise NZ could actually play footy - are most of our team Phoenix players? And Iran was not completely match fit I don't think, due to political dramas leading up.

ALso plenty of empty seats in various matches thanks to the eye gouging ticket prices.

I can't normally muster up enthusiasm for following sportsball - but I save up what interest I have for a 4 yearly bout of WC soccerball.

The NZ game was great watching and of course, when you're in such company, a draw seems like a win 😂

I expect things will settle down to a more tense, risk averse and dare I say it, boring style when it hits the knock out stages.

The TVNZ app seems to work ok and the coverage is good for including various lengths of highlights in case you dont want to watch 8 hours of sport in one day.

i'm glad to see such positive footy from the home of footy.

the darn internet spoiled it by showing me the score but i didn't catch which side had scored what so i did still have a good watch until the 3rd goal then the game got spoiled but by then it was already a good game.

Also when is the president of portugal growing a pair to drop CR7. It's cringe watching Portugal. He just stands there, offside half the time. The team have learnt to play as 9 outfield players and not involve him at all it seems.

I have to say, this has been one of the most open and attacking WC's ever.

With the stakes that much higher as the best third placed teams can go through to the knockout stages, it's encouraged more goal hunting, which is great for the spectators.

A shame that the Kiwis weren't able to capitalise on their great start, but when you are up against the ref as well as the opposition, it makes it pretty hard.

Obvious fouls on NZ players not punished, but similar (but in some cases less severe) incidents by NZers punished with free kicks.
Overall an exciting game ruined by very poor officiating. Not the first game to have seen some very ordinary reffing.
Conversely, some of the officials have been excellent. Beyond excellent, even.

Agree and they were on such a roll to begin with, fast and team coordinated. They changed their entire game in the second half you could sense their despondency by the visible slowing down. The Egyptian player's goals considerably lifted their game compared to the first half.

ref probably has money in Egypt, or bought by some mafia. not unheard of, but extremely difficult to prove nowadays with crypto etc.

The officiating in the NZ v Egypt match was dire, don't dispute that Egypt were the better side on the day, but that ref ruined what could have been a much better spectacle. Think they said it was his first fixture at WC level, seemed to give early yellows each way to assert his authority then ignored plenty in the contest for the ball.
