The roads around Eden Park (the ones not affected by closure) were dead with traffic - big crowd of people mainly walked to the stadium. I also saw a lot of taxis/buses doing the run and down Dominion Rd.

Pity about the trains.

International Rugby Board (IRB) Rugby World Cup 2011

Following complaints to the IRB about the All Blacks being allowed to motivate themselves by performing the Haka before their games, other nations were asked to suggest pre-match rituals of their own. The IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 Organizing Committee has now agreed to the following pre-match displays:

1) The England team will chat about the weather, wave hankies in the air and attach bells to their ankles before moaning about how they invented the game and gave it to the world, but no one appreciates them.

2) The Scotland team will chant You lookin at me Jimmy?before each of them smash a bottle of beer over their opponents heads.

3) The Ireland team will split into two, with the Southern half performing a Riverdance, while the Northerners march the Traditional route from their dressing room to the pitch, via their opponents dressing room.

4) Unfortunately the Committee was unable to accept the Welsh proposal to form a choir and sing Tom Jones It Not Unusual.

5) Argentina will unexpectedly invade a small part of opposition territory, claim it as their own Las In-Goals-Areas and have to be forcibly removed by the match stewards.

6) Two members of the South African team will claim to be more important than the other 13 whom they will imprison between the posts. These two will then go about selecting the best parts of the pitch to settle on and claim that they have been there for centuries.

7) The Americans will not attend until almost full time. In future years they will amend the records to show that they were in fact the most important team in the tournament and Hollywood will make a blockbuster film called Saving Flanker Ryan.

8) Five of the Canadian team will sing La Marseillaise and hold the rest of the team to ransom.

9) The Italian team will arrive in Armani gear, sexually harass the female officials and then prepare pasta dishes, which they will flog to the crowd for a fortune.

10) The Japanese will shock fans buy demonstrating how to capture a whale for scientific research buy harpooning an opposition prop.

11) The French wont have a pre-match display and will simply hide in fear in the dressing room for the whole match.

12) The Australians will have a BBQ on their side of the field and invite the opposition over before the game. The food and alcohol will be in abundance and by the start of the game no-one will remember what they came to the stadium for. After some streaking, the singing of dirty songs and the occasional chunder everyone will go home thoroughly convinced it was a bloody good night.

13) The Moroccan team will quietly pray during the first half and then launch suicide attacks against the opposition after the break. Unfortunately, this strategy works well for the fi rst game only, after which Morocco is forced to withdraw from the Rugby World Cup due to lack of players.

14) Samoa will prepare a huge feast in the middle of the pitch by digging a large hole and filling it with burning embers. They invite the opposition over by saying, We like to have you for dinner. Its only when the opposition get to

the pit that they realize there is no meat and that they are the dinner!

Hopefully, with these policies now in place, further problems is this area of the game should cease to exists.

As for the RWC, it's great for the country and Auckland did turn it on last night:) I did have a slight worry about a potential power cut considering all the extra people in the city and all those lights:P

Auckland doesn't have a 3rd world railway system - from my experience one thing many 3rd world countries have is a?reliable railway system, in part because it's the only way people can get around.

That is a good point. That s why they should have had most if the big games in Wellington if they weren't planning on upgrading the auckalnd transport network in time. Wellington does have NZ best public transport system. The size of the stadium is largely irrelevent, as most viewer watch it on TV, which is where the world cup organisation makes it's money. And it would have been a lot cheaper than rebuilding that white elephant called eden park, which is still a mismatch of stands.

However the biggest disppointment plant night was the crap opening game, which has to be the worst opening games in the history of the world cup. Normally you have two teams of similar quality, so it should have been NZ v France at least(as they are in the same pool), which also would have been bitter sweet, as france often beats NZ at world cups. Also I beleive the final in 1987 was NZ vs france so that would have been a far more logical opening game. Tonga is a 3rd tier team, which played well for their ability, but they are not in the world class realm. Just one of many poor decisions and missed opportunities. Perhaps the organisers ddn't want to see NZ beaten again by france in the opening?

Come on All blacks! Wish I could go to at least some of the matches, but broke my ankle so can't go anywhere!

I am on holiday at Hatepe (Taupo) the moment, with the Welsh team coming here on Monday for a function hosted by a few X-All Blacks... Should be good if I can end up getting some tickets!

Anyway at the moment... Go the Romanians! Almost beating the Scotts.

Vodafone - badly. From about 4.30 - 6.30pm it was pretty much impossible to place a call anywhere near the viaduct. Txt messages were hit-and-miss. 3G data was pretty flaky for most of the evening in the CBD.

Yep, agree re crowd control - we accidentally ended up in the crush on Quay st, trying to get to the downtown carpark to watch the fireworks (choice of route = fail). Almost got completely stuck outside Movenpick - couldn't move and was getting squashed from all sides, was a bit scary for a few mins. Thankfully made it out the other side on to lower Albert st. Security and Police in the area seemed have no idea what was going on. Talked to a mother with a young child later who went through the same area - I have no idea how they did it.

Queen St had a nice atmosphere earlier in the evening with the zillions of Tongan fans and flags. Later in the evening the crowd definitely had an edge to it, people were starting to get drunk and aggressive.

Buses - our experience was pretty average. Caught Link bus into city - service is supposed to be every 15 mins, no bus for 40 mins and then 3 arrived within moments of each other. Going home was a farce - bus arrived and driver exited saying it was the end of his shift. Another driver was there, but she was supposed to be driving a different bus, which hadn't arrived. After 30 mins other driver took the sensible option and got our (now packed) bus moving. Again a 15 min service but no other buses arrived in the 30 mins we were sitting there.

Could have been worse tho - I feel for the people who tried to take a train or ferry...

Overall experience, 6/10, must try harder next time.

On a better note I can say how well our taxi service worked, got me from the cbd to MT Albert in record time and no ques, fully recommend Auckland's taxi service for your transport at the next event.

Perhaps if you imagine the team names to be the following
Apple
Google
Microsoft
Samsung
HTC
Nokia
etc
Then the tournament will become more interesting:). In fact it may be a way to resolve the interminable lawsuits at the moment!
I have paid for this tournament, both through my taxes and Sky subscription, so I am determined to jolly well enjoy it.

Edit: and as far as Eden Park is concerned, when I was there for the Bledisloe Cup Game last month I thought it was a great facility.

Nah it's just that I prefer technology to looking at men tumbling over each other

Bring back the Wellington V8s...I will however be watching the semi finals. And maybe the final if NZ actually make it in

Not everyone likes Rugby, My sports of choice are Skiing and Badminton (and I do go out and do them as well, ended up with a bruse on the leg from a rope tow pully at Broken River)
