Impressive from aucks to get from where they were mid innings to post 264. Just a smidge over par on this wicket. Robbie O'donnel is one of the most in form white ball cricketers in NZ, not to mention his experience and captaincy, but can't buy a chance to represent his country. Last weeks ton to get aucks into the final, then backing it up with 78no today. List avg 35, T20 avg 36 at SR ~130.

Without their strike bowlers had Canterbury 12-2, but Olivier just dropped Tom Latham which could cost the match, now an easy one but had to be taken.

If Canterbury lose another, especially Latham, scoreboard pressure is on.

This could be a cracker guys, watch it if you have some time today like us oldies ;-p

Auckland doing quite well without any Blackcaps players. I was expecting Guptill to play as he played the previous Ford Trophy games. Is he injured or is playing T20 leagues at the moment?

I expect 265 is a par score on this ground. Couple more early wickets and I think Auckland should win this.

For me, BC's need to restrict specialist seamers in the T20is to our most strike power couple only, unless we can get O'rourkes batting skills going.. #7-#9 must have a decent t20 avg both bat and ball, ie Clarkson and Kugs (potentially, both yet to convert domestic to T20i)

For me

Finn allen (wk)
Conway (wk)
Robbie O'Donnell
GP (wk last resort if decided wont bowl)
Will Young (give him another crack)
Chapman
Clarkson
Kugs
M Bracewell (T20i bat pales to his dom, but the bowl avg of 18 domestic is crazy, avg 10 in t20i is outrageous good)
Ferguson
Sears (living up to his potential with avg of ~19)

That is 4 seamers of substantial pace and accuracy and 2 spinners. Provided the seamers can vary pace without being obvious and can hit the yorker length at will, I think Lockie definitely, Orourke most likely, the all rounders not so much). So two very very high strike power Seamers and one Spinner, with GP barely bowled in t20is, having come off a heater Test series now averaging a meagre 19.

Robbie Odonnel, Will young and Chapman all offer solidity and huge amounts of experience in the middle which we needed and with plenty of partners in Kugs avg of ~20 at SR213 is whats needed in the tail.

Santer, is still in there for me, but M Bracewell is superior. He will also be incredibly good for GP to expand is repertoire.

Rachin just cant deliver in this format as a top 4 batsman, avg bat 18 and bowl 22 would be a handy all rounder 7-9 if it werent for Beastie being better with bat and ball and the two seamer all rounders are just too good with the bat and ball.

We need much better speed to market with our selections.

No I believe he is fulfilling his international obligations etc.

Boy he would be handy in our international T20 squad right now.

Didnt worker get a crack for the BC's I forget.

NEWS: Conway wont play 3rd, but Seifert in, will clearly WK (if abductor has actually healed). and Warner out for aussies with a sore abductor aka not capable of handling the National Stadium crowd lol.

Worker did get a shot but that was before they decided to go to Munro for opening then Nicholls in the ODI World Cup final.

It was quite harsh that he was dropped for Munro/Guptil in the 2019 ODI World Cup. Should have been opening with Guptill/Munro at that time. Worker was also averaging around 44 that time same as Guptill.

That is 7 batsmen capable of 50-100 runs at SR200 and two solid experienced batsmen in O'Donnel and Will Young who can keep the strike being fed to the pinch hitters, with Robbie being more offnsive but both would stop the rot as it occurs giving NZ a chance to chase 200 scores within 15 overs and bowling power to smash through 10 wickets. Milne would be a nice to have but Kugs gives you the same pace but better batting skills.

The 3 seamers (despite Milne going for 40 runs) combined bowling avg was 10.1 for 8 wickets. You shouldnt be losing matches with 8 wickets for 81 runs.

I think you are right Doc. and why would you risk it for a very meagre match pay day?

T20i however, if not like a herniated disc etc, I would risk it given the chance to make a name for yourself in the big leagues (not that he hasnt already with the IPL), as hes not getting any younger.

Has Boults time away from the international game impacted his effectivness/economy? Tim I felt even bowled better.

I strongly feel both international careers are coming to a close this year, just a personal guess. Still Steddy is not an out of the box selector, Im sure he will stick with them for as long as his own career is not impacted by it.

I think Boult did fine in the T20 league so far, probably just the type of pitches being played so far this series. I think the cake tin and Eden Park utilised drop in pitches. The T20 World Cup will be played in the West Indies and those pitches won’t be drop in pitches and are a lot slower so need to have variation in pace and off-cutters so I’m not too worried about Boult. Even Southee and Milne didn’t do too well so not concerned just yet. They should do fine in the T20 World Cup their bowling will suit the pitches there

Yes they have premium ball control.

Im mostly referring to utilizing series like this one to test our strike bowlers, but not to the detriment of having 5 batsmen in the team etc.

We have some amazing see ball hit ball players in Clarkson and both Bracewells.

In saying that, Id love to see Orourke with Sears and Lockie. and hopefully KJ in time. That is one frightning pace attack, use it I say, use it before they lose it hehe.

We have Matt Fisher starting out too who looks very good early on.

Edit: Just like Rachin and Southee dropping sitters at that level in the last T20, dropping Latham looks like it will cost aucks the game. Would have been really interesting with Sodhi, Lockie, KJ, Guptil (I know Im missing some). So overall good effort against a BC stacked side.

Latham out, about time, only 50+ more than should have been.

Interesting to see how the keeper Mitch hey goes around this easy 7rpo chase.

Wow Lister can swing that ball like KJ does but lefty.

Lister on a Richie 2 for 22 at 2.75rpo Outstanding.

and another drop in the field, very similar to Rachin's poor effort in the aus match, although he got a hand to it without looking like this is the first time hes caught a ball like Rachins drop. Either way its been the difference in the result which is a real shame for a severely handicapped auck team.

Edit: DWL rain reduced match aside, Cole Mcconchie won this essentially single handed Not Out. Congrats to Canterbury.

Put all the very high class players missing from auckland, dropping both Latham and Mconchie. auck ripped through canterbury even without their best bowlers. They got the top 6 but Cole remained and simply made the most of aucks mistakes.

Was a good year. auck were well on top and even with winning more games at one point were one pont behind 3 other teams who got excessive points imo, wins should outway rained out matches.

Regardless, the two best teams this season. a shame for auck it was during white ball cricket and had it been during red ball, especially if Nickalls gets 12th man, aucks bowlers would have cleaned the Red team up with ease. Such is domestic cricket. I wish there was a way to make it less unpredictable and fair for all teams impacted by BC selection.

The catching has been very average from NZ in this match, and this series. Can't even pin it on Mitchell, who is normally good for a drop or two.

On the positive side, Sears is money. He'd have half a dozen Aussie wickets to his name if his teammates backed him up the last couple of matches. They need to get these quicks into the test side, it's overdue to put the older guard out to pasture. Nothing beats pace, even those Aussies aren't immune to it.
