Most amazing yachts I've ever seen. Excellent racing. Credit to Luna Rossa for being worthy and strong competition. Hopefully these teams will meet on the water again. Congratulation's ETNZ for being the best in the world - design, development and racing.

“Team New Zealand has once again made us all so proud by retaining the America’s Cup as New Zealand’s cup,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

“On behalf of all of Aotearoa I congratulate Grant Dalton, Peter Burling and the whole team, those on the water and off it, for their achievements.

“Peter Burling and his crew of skilled sailors showed what they were capable of in all conditions, highlighting the tactical brilliance and sheer hard work of everyone involved.

“Following a hard year, Team New Zealand provided such optimism and excitement. I know with all the international limitations that COVID created this wasn’t the competition they expected, but they’ve made us so proud,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“Innovation, technology, guts and hard work have delivered glory for Emirates Team New Zealand,” Minister responsible for the America’s Cup Stuart Nash said.

“We want to see it all over again in 2023.The Government has already agreed that the successful America’s Cup team will be supported to stay together while it plans its next defence of the Auld Mug.

“Cabinet has agreed to invest in the team from within existing budgets. It would be subject to a number of conditions, including an expectation the Cup will be defended in New Zealand.

“The defence of the Cup offers a global opportunity to promote New Zealand as an innovative and successful nation, with spin-offs in areas like tourism and export deals.

“Although no request for support has yet been made, Team New Zealand has received government assistance following every America’s Cup since 2003. I anticipate a similar request will be made this year.

“$136.5 million was set aside in Budget 2018 for Cup-related infrastructure and activities and not all of that funding has been spent. Cabinet has agreed in principle to use that under-spend, should it be required, to keep the successful team together while it plans and regroups for AC37.

“The final details are still subject to negotiations, however it is likely to be a similar sum to that paid after AC35 in Bermuda in 2017, when $5 million went towards the team to help it prepare for AC36 this year,” Stuart Nash said.

Apart from the card pulled at the start that gave us an out of pocket advantage when LR had drawn the portside for both.

You can try downplay my post all you please. It's a bundle of mental mind games and tactical skill. And in back to back matches they both try to play on it in the 2nd as an advantage.

Mindgames are useful if you have boats that are fairly similar in performance. The main reason TNZ won was boat speed.

The Americas Cup is primarily a design competition and TNZ had a boat that was mostly faster than Luna Rossa and they were able to force errors with their boat speed. Every Americas cup I have seen has primarily been decided by boat speed not tactics.

I hope one of the key things that comes out of this is that all the projects that were put on hold for the America's Cup are now bought back to life with gusto.

It's bizarre that other parts of the world build infrastructure and other things ahead of time for events but in NZ we use it as an excuse to not build things.

I hope they retain the class. They are new. Whoever got the design right and tuned it in better, wins. If the class is retained, they will be truly optimised by then and much more will depend on skills than boat speed, the latter should be very close by then. Found 95%+ of the attainable speed, only sailing skill left

The America's Cup is a design contest. The whole 'class' idea is nonsense. The rules should be relaxed, and it should be about creating the fastest boat of a broad type. That type should be determined by the challenger, as per the Deed of Gift, however, lining up a new challenger and the challenge conveniently being made immediately after the conclusion of the event keeps the cup holder in control, which IMO should not be the case.

He was very classy the whole way through. Spirited, but pretty fair throughout and I agree, his comments there and at the presser afterwards were something many NZ teams could stand to learn from.

I think it helped it wasn't a contentious win though.

The rules could be relaxed but not too far. In F1 back in the day, when a car came out with turbo, tyres or wings etc they were totally dominant until the others caught up or the devices were banned. Go back to when the Cat was used by the US against a monohull, a no contest. The current rules make the boats similar, with still means to design differently. If the rules are set with time to design and build, that's reasonably fair. If the AC75 is kept, they are still very new, the key now is optimisation. TNZ won the design race in 2021, who will win the tuning of that design next time?

Yes I agree. Very gracious and his comment about feeling like they'd brought a knife to a gunfight was fair...he's probably the better sailor on his day right now, but as has been said - it's a design challenge, as much as sailing, so there's that.

I'm still stunned by the determination shown by both teams to finish the "bathtub race" where they both at one point or another were wallowing in the doldrums. I'd have likely thrown my toys at that point and sailed off the course.

Yes, it takes some serious self-belief to be able to win in those circumstances, and not exactly a small amount of luck too I'd suggest. But you have to be in it, to win it, and staying in the fight at least gives you a chance.

There are some excellent techniques for dealing with situations like that, such as breaking your situation down into smaller pieces, disregarding your oppositions position and focusing only on the things you can control. But you still need to be able to overcome your emotions and execute those techniques.
