One of the things that I found amazing during the racing, was when the boats were really going for it, say 45kt+ and they were near each other, and how it demonstrated even more clearly, just how big and how fast those yachts were. There were some moments, especially when they were heading right toward each other, that it nigh took my breath away. It was a shame there wasn't a bit more of it.

Yeah - imagine fleet racing these things rather than match racing. 😃

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I much preferred the old sailing boats with spinnakers, more competitors and closer racing including blocking and luffing.

I guess they have to be faster because speed sells. I liked the bigger boats with eh spinnakers too. But I think they have gone these these boats because they are cheaper, faster and use cutting edge technology. It appears competitive sailing is all heading towards foiled boats due to the speed. They are essentially flying kites now , rather than boats.

I was pretty annoyed to hear on TV  some of their team saying there was a 50-50 % chance of NZ not holding the next event.Even though the winning country usually holds it.  I suspect that is all political posturing to try and get money from the government, so it then gets held in Auckland. 250 million is only 200 houses

Go and watch some of the old races on youtube. The reality of most of them is they were dull as dishwater compared to the high speed boats.

I think Handle9 posted stats on past races, it was generally a rout by one team

If you want to build an AC75 the 2018 class design rules are here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xZRwGU-q4zGlD1jfStdY2kpzVB9PM96w/view

64 pages PDF.

If you divide cost by the number of times the boat was used in anger, it would be tens of millions of dollars.

In broad terms the Ineos UK challenge cost GBP110 m, say $200 m. Including the pre-Christmas races, they sailed 14 races. That’s $14 m per race or about $0.5 m per race minute.

These guys are billionaires. A few hundred million is like loose change that is paid for by investors and sponsors while at the same time written off as tax losses both at the same time, probably making them paradoxically even richer.

I tell you billionaires don't become billionaires by making profits from selling candy.

Ineos also took a stake in the AMG F1 team so they seem happy to spend money at the moment. There's a high chance they're also paying Lewis Hamilton's salary like Phillip Morris did with Schumacher.

I think I'd like to see the boats retained but go back to the big wide courses and longer races on more open waters. It was clear we would have seen more lead changes and different strategies play out with larger courses.

If it was up to me I'd make the America's Cup finals a series of races from various places around the City/North Island that all finished in the Harbour. Mercury Bay > Viaduct anyone?

Perhaps it is best it is not up to me.

So AC75s are confirmed as the class for the next cup and teams can only build one new boat. Probably the biggest surprise is the new nationality rules. This means that Spithill can only sail for Luna Rossa or Australia (unless he has an American passport) and Barker has to sail for an American syndicate or TNZ.

I can see why they have done that but also it's pretty tough on sailors who don't make their countries teams and are wanted by other syndicates. While this is closer to the original deed of gift the cup today is a privately run competition between yacht clubs not a competition between countries.

I guess you can argue many ways. original Deed of Gift. Country vs Country, and Billionaire vs Billionaire.

Grant Dalton seems to say/infer the issue is poaching. Its like having a World Cup for a sport and the countries import key foreigners within the rule to set a team. Of course NZ doesn't do that, apart from Conway, De Grandhomme, Wagner etc. Nor England with Ben Stokes etc etc.

I think to draw a line in the sand is good. Country or Yacht Club, it doesnt matter, but draw a line and stick to it. or make it a free for all, but ban the use of Team NZ Team UK etc

Team NZ is a brand name, not an exclusive NZ team. Chris Dickson challenged for the cup under the Tutakaka Yacht Club at the same time as Team NZ in 1995.

What it does do is take the opportunity away for people to get jobs. They've only done it for the sailing team, they still want to be able to access overseas designers. It seems quite self serving, as is their right as the defender.

Yes, I get that. it reminds me of most sports these days, maybe I'm old fashioned. I wasnt aware of the designers thing. Team NZ is a brand name, yes, but for most Kiwi's its "our" team. Like Glenn Ashby is :-)

Whether its country or yacht club or a free for all, I don't care, just make the rules and let that be it. As I type this an ad, Americas Cup is the New Zealand Cup!

Rule changes are fine but not every event is my personal opinion.

Like many of us when we got in the mix, it was exciting. I found then, plus now exciting. This time round my non expert opinion was were are faster, despite what the experts said early on. They sail better. Two boats with different pros and cons. We make mistakes they don't, then they do and we don't.

I really enjoyed it. Same as any sport when its not that obvious until near to the fat lady singing.
