The fastest boat always wins, thats been said a lot. If its a longer race, its done. Mistakes can be made up. If its a short race, mistakes matter. Im not sure if it matters what boat type they use, the key is that speed matters. I favour the shorter format as its a better mix for tbe boat and the sailors to be part of the result, and not just as the boat is faster.

The next America's cup should be sailed in Tauranga just off the mount in the cats.

I hear  in the news this morning that the Gov has ruled out any FTA coverage of the next AC.

To me, the whole point of the AC is that it is the cutting edge of sailing technology, where the design and engineering of the boat is at least as important as the sailing on the day.  It's the equivalent of F1 motor sport.

There is plenty of one-design and handicap sailing racing at all levels from 10-year old kids in Optimists upwards.  For ocean racing, there is the VOR and the Vendee Globe, amongst others.

AC should be allowed to evolve as it has been up to now, as an incubator and showcase for new sailing technology

I would be disgusted if we hosted the event and it was not free to air. If it is going to be SKY you can guarantee it will be a flop.

Anyone can buy the rights. Can't blame Sky, or whoever bought them. Who owns the contact? Will it be Team NZ or is it some AC central association? That's where the complaint should be made.

Was this AC a flop?

Unsure as its retrospectively updated previous posts

It seems yes you can.

Wonder if Joker97 is the same as joker97? That could be fun.

Spithill publicly had a go at Dalton a number of times in San Fran.  On that basis Dalton's comments seem fair enough.  If he really doesn't care how Spithill is feeling, why feign empathy?  It's all sideshow anyhow. The main thing is we won.

I think there should be an open design rule for the next Americas cup.  But ... you have to sail your competition boat from the country you represent, to where the competition is held innocent.  Could be tough for the Swiss ... wink

Seriously though ... I'd love to see it sailed in tougher conditions.  It's starting to look like fair-weather drag racing.  While the speeds are spectacular (for yachts) the racing itself is not that great from a match racing and technical perspective.

dickytim: ......I can't wait to see it back in NZ.

I do have one question, that is with all the development around the Via Duct now where would we put the Teams? Where will the racing be? I would love to see a stadium finish like Bermuda but where could we achieve this?

Good questions.  I'd say the event can't run in NZ without substantial government support. While there's a strong fan base in NZ for AC yachting (me included), the sad fact is that the large majority of the NZ electorate think any government funding is a complete waste of money. You've only got to listen to the crap on talk-back radio to hear that. When the government pulled its support of TNZ in 2015, in the face of a financial return which was a no-brainer, they claimed it was because Auckland lost the right to host a World Series event. But I reckon that was an excuse to drop what has become a political hot potato in this country.

I expect Dalton won't be excluding warm places like Dubai or the med. Or even Bermuda. Coutts and Ellison came to that conclusion for the last event and took it out of the US.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that the government has a change of heart.

Didn't sky just re broadcast the event on their channels? I am meaning if SKY was the ones filming everything and using their technology it would be a flop. The current AC had good technology and great angles of the boats i found.

I don't think Sky added any value, the direct broadcasts from AC via the app were perfectly adequate.

Surely an AC event in NZ would be the perfect opportunity to introduce legislation preventing the sale of goods and services such as event coverage via a single monopoly retailer.  I have no problem with Sky buying rights, but I want to select my coverage from a range of competing providers.

I'm not understanding the Sky hate, I thought they covered it on Prime (free to air) with an hour delay. Is that not good enough?

No Sky hate on my part, I'm happy for them to offer a service but I don't like monoploies of any sort and in the case of the AC, the service offered direct from the content creator was in no way inferior to that from Sky.  But vastly cheaper if you're not a Sky customer already.

I wasn't aware it was on Prime, but for a major event such as this I want to see it live.
