I wonder how likely it is that an app will be available for Smart TVs?

Or will I need to go to back to chrome casting?

I'm going to wait and see what those FTA games are.

Not sure about you, but I'll pick modern HD streaming over "blocky and unwatchable at times" any day.

... and at a price likely to be less than Fan Pass four years ago.

And how does FanPass quality now compare to Sparks livestreaming quality? Oh wait, the latter is an unknown quantity but the platform has been tested with a whopping 7,000 concurrent users in NZ (TVNZ at the CWG). How well does that scale? You're putting a lot of faith in an untested product with little scope for trialling....

Unsure comments Re skys previous tried and true methods for showing etc may not be as comparable to 2015 this time around?. With the host broadcaster this time around differing (and can't find a mention of them using anyone from OSB), the man in the back with the commentary and possibly stream/camera cuts may be customised a bit. But it like'y won't be the same experience anyway?

One of the things that I found better between 2015 and 2011 was NZ's Camera on a wire system. They had a similar system but it wasn't anywhere near as good in 2015 in the UK in my opinion.

I was often left frustrated about the angles shots were shown from.

This will be controlled by Japan and isn't directly related to this, but thought I'd mention it in passing.

Hopefully there will be steaming options where the video doesn't look like it was taken with an old potato. As a minimum it needs to be 1080P at a decent bitrate, 4K/4K HDR could also be a realistic option in 2019.

1080p @60FPS with at least 10Mbit video rate please... Otherwise any fast moving scenes are a pixelated mess

It’s possible there may be some teething issues, but that’s the price you sometimes have to pay to move forward. If we always stayed with tried and true, we’d still be watching one TV channel in black and white.

"The World Rugby U20 Championship is due to kick off in France next month and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in July, but Spark has clarified it has sub-licensed the rights to those events to TVNZ as it won't be ready to stream them.

Depending on the timing of the 2019 under-20 championship, the RWC may be the first tournament it offers as a paid service online, so it may be jumping in at the deep end. "

So Spark wont be ready to stream even by mid-2018. There is moving forward - and there is "hope and prayer". You're sitting in the latter category.

With rugby one thing I like to do when recorded is to fast forward stoppages (injuries, ball being out of play, waiting for kicks to be taken, setting up scrums etc) which allows a full game to be watched in an hour or less. Useful for when you're trying to watch early before work etc. Usually a bit harder to do this with streaming on demand compared to recorded on MySky so be interesting to see what you can do in this regard.

On Netflix it's easy enough to FF a streamed programme. LightBox is similar although not quite as easy. From memory you have to FF by repeated 30 second jumps with lightbox.

I do hope Spark is up tot he challenge of live streaming sports via an app. No doubt they have developed some capability in their LB team. But massively multi-streaming the same live stream seems like a much bigger ask than the latest episode of Outlander.

Delivery of LB to multiple devices has been lacklustre too (e.g. Android TV boxes).
