I don't think the Blues wanted to play Plummer at all to be honest. He's only played because Perofeta got injured and Black was out a bit as well.

He couldn't kick a cold at the moment - he's got a ways to go.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Dan Carter signing already. I don't know how much he'll play but the internal conflict it'll cause Crusaders supporters is worth ten times his $1800 a week contract.

Yep, I don't see myself coping well seeing him in blue.

Not one post about the game last night?

For me the real winner are the new rules. A personal bug bear for years (one of the reasons I gave up) was the contest at rucktime had gone. You got tackled, you waited for your team to blow over and push everyone out of the way, then you put the ball back.

Thankfully those days are gone, and it's made a huge difference to the speed of the breakdown. Very happy with this rule change.

It made the game very stop start hell of a lot of penalties and often broke the flow of the game. Players were standing back as no idea if they should commit to the ruck as they didn’t want to get penalized in their 22.

Batman: There are new rules?

Weirdly, now I actually read the changes on the SuperXV website, there aren't actually changes around the breakdown area, they're just enforcing the existing ones properly:

Breaking down the breakdown

NZR National Referee Manager Bryce Lawrence said the existing laws at the breakdown would be applied more strictly to create faster attacking ball and a fairer contest.

“Fans enjoy Super Rugby because it’s a fantastic spectacle and our referees like to allow the game to flow. We’re confident we’ll see a contest that is faster, fairer, safer and easier to understand.

“We’re not changing the laws of the game, we’re being stricter about how we referee them.”

The key focal points for the referees at the breakdown are summarised below:

  •

    • Ball carriers will be allowed only one dynamic movement after being tackled.
    • Crawling, or any secondary movement other than placing or passing, will be penalised.
    • Tacklers will be expected to roll away immediately in the direction of the side-line. This will be a referee’s “number one priority” at the tackle.
    • There will be “extra focus” on the offside line with defenders expected to be “clearly” onside to provide attacking teams more space.

It will take a while for the players to adjust to the breakdown rules and their policing. 30+ penalties did kind of ruin the spectacle, as did the home supporters booing any decision adverse to their team. Not such a good look for the “first rugby game with live spectators” that would have been viewed around the world.

As a Chiefs supporter I believe it would have been unjust if they had sealed the victory with McKenzie’s drop goal. And it was indicative of the whole game when they turned the ball over with 90 seconds left on the clock and allowed Gatland (the younger) to slot the winning droppy.

The fact that the Highlanders played quarter of the game with 14 men and even scored a try in that time speaks volumes about their character and the lack of leadership when Cane and Cruden aren’t on the field for the Chiefs.

I had to smile when Smith tip-tackled Webber in back play, a moment that the commentators obviously saw but stopped themselves from commenting on. It was as if Smith was saying to Webber “Remember me? I’m NZ’s No1 halfback.”

Probably an attempt (not here to discuss evidence in science and medicine etc) to reduce coronavirus infection between teams?

;

I went last night.
Best game since Otago beat the Lions a few years back.
Great atmosphere and a game that was close with ups and downs.
Highlanders played better than has all year. Lineouts worked. No embarrassing dropping of the ball.

Managed to hold out with 14 players twice.

Two pitch invasions and one good old fashioned streaker wearing nothing but his shoes.

When that winning drop goal done everyone was jumping up and down in main stands.

Glad I went.

A.

TBH the tackled players had been taking the piss with this for years. They'd been allowed to hold onto it until their entire team had blown over before placing it back, or keep rolling under their forwards. There was little chance of a contest so I think they didn't have much of a choice.

The tackled player and the tackler have both been pretty out of control for years. Look at the Spingbok tactic of the tackler "lengthening" the ruck to get in the way of the halfback or the way NZ teams always immediately concede a ruck penalty after a line break. It's both logical and cyncial if they aren't pinged.
