Jaxson:
PR handling around this has been shockingly bad. Guard of honour in the hospitality booth clapping him off, tears in the journalist interviews etc but nothing formal from anyone.
from Liam directly
Man, read those quotes!

I've been sitting here trying to think of a way to put it into words.
Just really disappointed and genuinely feel for Daniel Ricciardo.
Yes he's not the best driver in the field but at every turn this season and frankly the last couple of years he's been hamstrung and hung out to dry.
Not only that but vCarb/RB and all have handled it SO poorly, with such incredible disrespect, whatever the reason, for someone who is genuinely loved among the fanbase/drivers/media. Astonishing.
Then as a kicker, immediately follow it up with a at best 'puff piece' video from Lawson on the vCarb instagram???
God damn man.
Everyone like Danny Ricc, including us here. But the reality is he has been off form for a few years. His past racing and potential to regather form got him the seat, but in reality he could not deliver
Batman:
While you guys were sleeping, Liam Lawson becomes an F1 driver with Racing Bulls/VCARB/Visa Cash App RB. I think he holds the lap record for nearly all the race tracks in NZ, though his did them in a pretty fast race car.
Excellent news, not before time. It's all on Lawson now to demonstrate he deserves to be there on ability over the next six races, and I hope it comes to light whether he is already signed for 2025 or not.
The mission is not unlike Ricciardo's before him, be as good as or better than Tsunoda as a minimum. He's got Hadjar, Iwasa and possibly Colapinto waiting in the wings to take his spot if he is anything less than impressive. Good luck to the young man, another Hawke's Bay product made good.

Deliver what?
In the early part of the season Tsunoda picked up a couple of 7th places giving him the points difference. Then Ricciardo's car got a new chassis. It was either an improvement or the placebo effect has resulted in both scoring the same points and Ricciardo ahead in non scoring races. The team never seems to have both drivers in scoring positions at same time. Since Emilia Romagna both have had an 8th,9th &10th place with it looking like that car has fallen behind. Lawson may be working hard to get points.

Saw him at these events. There were a few young kiwis doing quite well at the time.
Batman: Whether he's any good in f1, I wish him all the best.
Car isn't really that relevant. Plenty of other cars back in the pack, and behind VCARB. Plenty of top drivers that are well back in the pack, like Bottas
Its about can Liam compete. He was thrown into the car last year with literally no notice, never been in it, just the odd stint in older spec cars. Raced 5 times, beat Yuki. Some or most of those 5 races were on new tracks for him
2024, he would need 3 races to get up to speed, although that didnt matter 2023. If he equaled Yuki in these 6 races, that's a win, as he doesn't have the F1 experience and the cars experience, and possibly a track or two that he hasn't raced on. All negatives.
The best comparison is the teammate
Apparently going to be a PU change for Austin, so 10-place grid penalty. Some confusion currently as to whether he can take the drop in the Sprint or it is held over to the GP. I'd think it has to taken in the main race otherwise all teams would just swap out their engines at sprint weekends.

With all the talk of Liam Lawson getting his shot, it's interesting to read the articles on why certain drivers may not necessarily be on the circuit for talent reasons alone - sometimes it's due to what they bring to the team in the way of sponsors and investors.
It's as much a sport of nepotism and connections as it is of skill and tenacity, by the sound of it!
Good luck to Lawson - I hope he does well. And good luck to Ricciardo - I hope he goes to the States and makes a killing in one of their competitions, be it Nascar or Indycars etc.

Agree. Pinnacle of Motorsport, massive teams with unreal technology. Amazing cars. But the drivers are as you say "handpicked" not skill picked generally

The NZ Mafia have that covered off as well. Scott McLaughlin (already in car #3) & Scott Dixon in Indiecar and SVG in Nascar. Maybe there's an opening in Senior tennis.

He already had a send off then we he finished with McLaren, then he miraculously got another chance at Red Bull after taking a year off. How many send offs does he need?
Also he hasn't actually announced his retirement from F1, how many times have we seen decent drivers like KMag or Hulkenburg be out for year then come back when a mid field team need an experienced driver. Several teams are taking big risks with rookies that may not pan out next year (Alpine, Hass, Mercedes!). The Audi seat is still not set too.
Finally we don't really know what is happening with Perez as yet, what if he retires after Mexico and Danny Ric gets some kind of final race at Abu Dhabi in the main car? I wouldn't put that kind of marketing stunt past Red Bull.
Liam gets a grid penalty at Vegas
Sprint weekend too, and he hasn't raced this track, so practice time is cut by 2/3
Positive side is low expectations apart from quali.
He is far better prepared than last year, by a large margin
Lawson is the guest on this week's F1Nation podcast. Really looking forward to seeing him behind the wheel again at Austin, the break over the past three weeks has certainly dragged like treacle. Expecting him to hit the ground running despite all the obstacles. There was talk a while back that VCARB would be bolting some more Red Bull parts to the car in an effort to improve overall performance, so I'm hoping we might start to see a quicker car.
