Wayne Barnes’ comment in Saturday’s game, “It may be a dumb rule, but it is still a rule” (or words to that effect) rang true with me and got me thinking. Are there any ‘dumb’ rules that you think should be changed? Here’s a couple off the top of my head;

Pretty much everything surrounding a rolling maul. The only time in the field of play when you are allowed to be in an offside position, ahead of the ball carrier, actively obstructing defenders trying to get to the ball. And the defenders aren’t allowed to ‘clear’ obstructers or impede them by tackling. The repetition of lineout, rolling maul, penalty, lineout, rolling maul, penalty, until a try is scored is ruining the game. I believe the rule was instituted to negate Southern Hemisphere running rugby in favour of Northern Hemisphere forward dominance.

That the ball has to be lifted clear of the ground by the halfback before defenders can advance. I believe as soon as the halfback puts their hands on the ball they should be fair game. It would avoid the feinting moves that halfbacks try and also the huge pauses that happen between touching the ball and lifting it off the ground.

Wouldn't blame Scott Robertson if he wanted to keep well clear of this absolute shambles... unfortunately, looks like this current coaching staff will continue, but reckon it's crucial Schmitz plays a much bigger role, at least he has good rugby nous.

Robertson has been clear it's head coach or nothing.

I wouldn't take the job now if I was him. He'd be on a hiding to nothing.

If he was given the job in the first place we wouldn't be in this shocking situation.

Yeah, there are plenty of silly/dumb rules - what about where a team is allowed to drop kick out from behind their own goal line, allows them to exit too easy to get out of trouble... therefore the attacking team is punished because a scrum wasn't used close to the goal line where they can apply a heap of pressure on the defending side.

What really annoys me about the rolling maul is one in which a player is held up to create a maul.  The intention of the attacking player was to get to ground but being held up there is apperently no offside line, and anyone from the opposing team actively runs in grabs at the attacking player from any direction they like, and a turnover is called.  The maul rules remain, so if they are being held and a maul called, the players need to join from the onside line - infuriating!

I watch a lot of Rugby and Mauls and Scrums remain an utter mystery to me. I've tried to understand. It must be a nightmare to referee.

At this point I've given up, I just see it happening and wait for the ruling.

When is the squad for SA named? Is it next week Wednesday or was it supposed to be today?

So, does anyone have anything positive to say about the series against Ireland?

I thought Bower did reasonably well, seemed to be pretty mobile throughout. I thought some of our offloading from the forwards showed promise. I thought the skills handling in the wet in the first test were very impressive, esp for the first test of the year.

We showed periods on attack where we were finding holes.

We play an average Australian team or Springboks team that doesnt show up, RNZ says see, its working and the cracks get papered over again.

So I think you are right about this. Right now, for me the priority needs to get the basics right. This series should be about making sure

1) We are accurate at the breakdown

2) Execution of our core skills are restored to their usual high standard.

3) Our kicking is not aimless, including appropriate use of the box kick etc.

4) Our lineout functions well.

5) Our discipline is good.

Once those things are sorted, then we could look at other areas like our attacking structure.

Anybody prepared to make some educated guesses as who won't be selected to go?

If we have enough props, it would be bad for Karl T to be selected again given he is heading overseas and won't make the RWC.

Not sure about RTS. I guess he will go if they want him at the RWC. Unsure if Cane will continue as captain, I'm guessing possibly not. I don't really want Ardie to be burdened with the captaincy, he is our best player, and needs to focus on just doing that, esp right now. Whitelock likely I imagine.

Loose Forwards will be interesting. I think the backs are sorted. Clarke may not travel unless he is 100. Wonder if they will swap Christie for Weber? Maybe not.

No suspension, yellow card only.

Totally ridiculous.

You can see in the replay right before impact he is moving upward.

Where is that in the criteria to determine whether it’s a red or yellow.?

How are you absorbing if you are moving forward/upward?

The same way Jack Goodhue was moving upward in the super rugby final.

Apparently, it's a 'shock' that the Wallabies might be talking to Eddie Jones for the head coach position with the Wallabies after 2023 RWC? I'd be more shocked if they weren't.

I wonder if Rennie will apply for the AB's job?
