I am getting ready to kit out the bikes my kids ride, with lights, front and rear. I don't want to go crazy expensive, but I want something good value. I am not sure how important ip ratings are, if we should be looking for USB-C rechargeable, and anything else we do or don't want.

It's an option to order either locally or via Amazon AU.

Any advice appreciated.

This clearance site often has some good deals on Lezyne lights. I recently bought the 800XL. Unfortunately they are still Micro USB but at the price I made the compromise. You have to get lucky with what stock they have available at any time but if you check regularly there will be other lights that turn up.

I can definitley recommend Lezyne lights - I have a USB-rechargeable rear light that clips onto my frame/seat tube and a permanently-wired front light on my eMTB along with helmet lights.

Rear light - mine is the old version of this - it's very bright and has multiple flashing options: https://ride.lezyne.com/collections/led-rear-bike-lights/products/stick-plus-drive-rear

Another thing I can recommend are the helmet-mounted lights like these: Lezyne 2-in-1 helmet lights - they aren't up to much for lighting the way but they are nice and bright for alerting anyone nearby that there's someone on a bike. A great safety aid.

There's a very similar front light to the 600XL on Alix for around $10+. Search for 'T6 bike light'.

I've got a couple and they're quite good (but also micro USB). I need a new rear light and I've just ordered this one:

Well, I done f’d up 🥲

Went for a ride on Sunday and ended up going otb after clipping a tree. A trail dig was occurring near where I crashed and they were asking if I was ok but I couldn’t really answer as I was trying to collect myself from landing on my front superman styles.

Once collected I was like yep I’m good, there was some blood coming through my pants in the knee area and I thought that was strange but was like whatever. I got up to walk and it felt real weird so I pulled my pants down and I had a massive gash in my leg above the knee, oh dear.

TLDR I got help from the trail builders who helped close the wound as best they could with what they had, helped from where I was to the road, bike kept safely awaiting my return and driven to hospital. I’m incredibly lucky they happened to be near where I crashed so I had help quickly nearby, bonus is one of them is an anaesthetist at Wellington hospital.

I ended up needing surgery to clean and inspect the wound before being stitched back up. I’m wearing a leg splint, will be off work for 3 weeks and I can’t bend my leg for 6 weeks.

This is the wake up call to always wear knee pads as this could have been avoided had I worn mine 🙄

Glad you're (more or less) OK.
I wear kneepads all the time, but don't often crash, so often think about not wearing them.
I have no doubt that the moment I go off road without pads, this sort of thing will happen to me.

Hope you heal up quickly and are able to get back out on the bike (safely) sooner rather than later.

Thanks!

Wearing knee pads will be 100% mandatory from now on that’s for sure. I don’t often crash but when I do it’s usually a bad one, fractured scapula was the last one. But I have been pushing myself riding faster and harder lately.

The irony is they had been talking about removing that tree prior to me crashing, and since my crash they’ve now removed it so I’m glad to have consulted on some trail safety 🤣

The trail is new, so I’ve only ridden in 2.5 times before that happened

I always wear kneepads on my DH bike but not often on my Eebs, I must make more of an effort to be fair.

I've been missing not riding, havent been on the bike since May (winter and all). Also in Febuary I lent my Trek Rail to a mate and I haven't been to pick it back up yet. I went through a massive plan of what I was going to do with my Electric bikes going forward. My original plan was to sell my Fuel Exe and Rail and buy a new Velduro Rouge.

Then I had my conscience catch up and remind me about the amount of money you lose on Electric bikes particularly brand new. I purchased my Rail during covid at full price and it stung to see them 30% cheaper a year later.

So I have two options coming into summer, keep both or my favoured plan is to build up my Rail with the better parts from the Fuel (Carbon wheels & Transfer dropper) then replace the air shock with a coil. Thankfully all those parts are interchangable from Rail to Fuel apart from fork and shock. Then I'll most likely sell off the Fuel and keep one good EMTB.

I don't wear kneepads as they would be extremely annoying for endurance rides and a likely source of much chafing.

It's always a balance of how much protective gear to wear.

I've got to say - I have worn sleeve-style slip on kneepads for a few years now and I barely even notice them.

I do often wonder if I am tempting fate by not wearing elbow pads but I haven't had a skin-splitter on the upper body for a few years now, so maybe I am OK.

We're always ok right up until that moment that we aren't.

But yeah, when I'm riding events between 6 and 12 hours non-stop, not keen on adding anything that could chafe or build up heat.

Hi - I have a Merida E160 e-bike with a Shimano DU-E8000 motor that has done 13000km (90% on-road) and is getting a bit noisy. I am thinking of either replacing the motor, or buying a new bike. One complicating factor is that I have 2 batteries, which I would want to be compatible with a new motor, should I choose to go in that direction. Any recommendations? (Sorry about the double posting - I thought my new post would be in this forum as I had it selected when I posted)

Hi. The DU-E8000 is a Gen 1 BMS-based motor, so the batteries will only be compatible with those older motors.
If you want to use them, you'll need to buy a bike with an older EP8 motor, not a newer EP6 or EP801.
They take Gen 2 batteries and run the Gen 2 BMS.

I also have a Merida e160, but it's the newer (but not newest) version with the Gen 2 battery/motor and is only compatible with Gen 2 batteries.

My recommendatin would be to try and get the most you can for the existing batteries and sell them separately to the bike, then upgrade to a newer more efficient bike that will likely have a battery that lasts longer, has higher capacity and is generally better all-round.

Anyone catch Redbull Hardline Wales, over the weekend?
I know there's lots of Tour De France chat about at present, but the real drama was in Dyfi

HARDLINE FINALS WAS A DISASTER!! How to Watch Red Bull Hardline Wales 2025 Red Bull Hardline UK 2025: event info & videos

Some massive crashes, lots of drama and some really surprising results!
Only one of the Women's field managed to make to finals day - and she completed the course to be crowned the first ever Women's champion!
Bernard Kerr had a huge crash in qualifying and as he was being stretchered into an ambulance, smiled and said, "Nothing serious, just coughed up a bit of blood and hurt my leg. Should be good to race tomorrow"...which he duly did and came 5th!!

Some solid Kiwi performances, too:
Tuhoto Ariki Pene came 4th, Same Gale 6th and George Brannigan 7th. Oli Clark (a last-minute call up due to injuries sustained in practices) came in a respectable 12th.

One rider (the aptly named Kaos Seagrave) made it across the finish line without his bike after he crashed metres away from the line.

It was very entertaining and quite scary.
It's available on Redbull TV if you want to see the replay or highlights.

If I could share the picture of the wound it might make you reconsider knee pads, but it’s not safe for work.

The cut itself was 12cm in length just above my knee, seems to be healing well which is good.

As is typical when one is injured the weather has been mint for riding too, sigh!
