insane:

Perhaps, but watching some of the videos, that boring design looks to be stable as anything. Who cares what it looks like if it crosses the line first - there's no points for design flair. When I saw their massive front wing endplates all I could think about was that scene fron Ben-Hur of the chariots going wheel-to-wheel.

I'm on the fence with Newey, he might design gorgeous curves and winglets etc but are they optimal? You'd have to consider that CFD aided designs could well be far superior to even a master analogue aerodynamicist.

Wont RBR use CFD also?

Are the videos on Youtube? I thought they weren't televised, or were they recorded for the media playback later?

Of course - I just mean that I'm not sure whether having Newey is such an advantage as what it was 20 or even 10 years ago. His preconceived notions of what good is could be a hinderance rather than a benefit.

The video snippet was on some Youtube channel that popped up last night, driver61 or peterwindsor

Interesting article on porpoising

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/the-mechanics-behind-porpoising-in-f1-and-how-to-fix-it/8693581/

In short, they have more down force, but the stiffer suspension causes DF to stall, then the car rises, then DF recovers etc. Up and down. They can soften suspension to dampen the cars movement but then they lose DF on fast corners. One of probably a few key areas where the race is for who solves them first

McLaren have done some clever stuff in this space and they're not suffering as much as the rest.  They're running slightly higher but using a low pressure air skirt to seal the floor (rather than use the ride height) from clever bodywork.  They could be in a good place if the other teams do not get on top of it fast.

Yeah, and last half of last season it had some decent pace too

yup, they've got a good chassis, great drivers (riccardio needs to redeem himself though), the all powerful Merc engine and with the current chassis problems in the other teams I feel they good be up there!  Looking forward to the start of this season to really see who has solved the challenges and how well they go.

Yeah hoping the new McLaren suits both drivers.
Tend to forget they had to stop developments last year after using up their tokens on the engine supplier swap.
Fingers crossed for a good year for them finally.
And also hope there are several teams genuinely in a fight for it this year too.

Haas exploded onto the scene when they first arrived. Somewhat dubious supply chain sourcing was pretty cunning, similar to the pink Mercedes scenario.

After that their title sponsor wanted out. Only wanted to be in F1 if winning and looking like vankers did not appeal.

Have been chasing sponsorship just to survive ever since and taking pay drivers is part of that.

Real shame is to have a Schumacher tied up in this mess.

Televised testing starts today, 8pm NZ time. Nothing on Spark Sport schedule yet, but as they had non televised highlights for the first test, I assume they will have this test. With commentary I hope
