Hi - I have a Merida E160 e-bike with a Shimano DU-E8000 motor that has done 13000km (90% on-road) and is getting a bit noisy.

I can't really comment on replacements, but that's quite a lot of mountainbike to use on road. Would a more road/commuter orientated e-bike make more sense?

For some perspective, I'm a fairly enthusiastic (mountainbike) weekend warrior and my last two bikes have racked up just under 8000kms between them. In eleven years! I'm not saying that is the cause of any issues, but there was an article a couple of years ago with a rider who went through numerous Shimano motors. The issue I saw was she was doing motorcycle level of kilometres and just going through motor after motor. I don't know if e-bikes are mature enough yet for that kind of usage.

Thanks for your perspective but I would need two bikes - one for off-road and one for on-road. That doesn't make economic sense in my case

That's fair enough. I got forced to tally up my mountain bikes the other day. I have ten that are rideable and I'm not sure how many frames and parts I have.

😁 It's just as well my partner doesn't go in the attic that often!

Unfortunately that's going to be your dilemma, your big road kms are probably going to wear the motor prematurely.

Edit. Found the story. It was 7000kms in two years or so. But this story made no mention of multiple replacements. Just the one motor giving up and a battle over who should pay for replacement.

Just out of interest I ended up getting the Trek X-Caliber 8 after asking a while ago.

it had the appropriate mounting lugs for a pannier rack and I liked the color.  As it’s only base level components, they will give me something to upgrade at a later date.

To be honest, base-level or slightly better is usually good enough for the majority of riders anyway.
Mostly the improvements in the higher end are weight, sexiness and largely un-needed tech that usually trickles down the following year.
I know this from Kashima-coated experience.

As a fellow Trek X-Caliber 8 owner, good purchase. Its one of those bikes where you look at its spec and can't fathom how they sell it at the price point that they do when compared with similar specced bikes from other brands.

Also as an X-Caliber 8 owner, I'm not sure what you would want to upgrade? Its pretty well specced outof the box.

I hadn’t really been on a mountain bike since the 80s when there were no real manufacturers and one built one’s own unit.  Mostly I ride a touring bike.

initial observations

 - chain angles in the lowest gears - I thought the derailleur was going to hit the ground.

 - how far forward the pedals are to a touring bike

 - the upper body angle

Varies from bike to bike.
XC bike will have very different geometry and seating position to both a dedicated trail bike or an enduro bike.

I had to see what the X-Caliber 8 looks like.

Hydraulic disc brakes - check

1 x transmission - check

Bouncey front end - check

Mounting lugs (bosses?) for rear frame - check

Wound is healing nicely, though I’m still not able to fully bend my leg without stiffness and pain. Think it’ll still be a few weeks away till I’m able to ride a bike..

This is probably as safe for work as it gets now:

Hairy people need swimsuits too.  Well, if you go full yeti/chewbacca, maybe not.

Speaking of wounds and healing...well, not really.

I changed my saddle recently and have done a couple of good long rides (for me) since installing it.

I have to say - it is nice to walk away from a weekend of riding and not feel like I have spent a month in San Quentin.

New saddle is a SDG Bel Air III

I looked at a lot of different saddles and have used a number of them in the past, but ultimately this was the best combo of bang-for-buck to use on an eMTB.

Good combo of comfort and utility - not so padded that it gets in the way, not so sleek that it hurts just to look at it.
