At a guess, from personal experience, your hydration and fueling needs work.

But yeah, there's many factors at play when you do endurance stuff and even if you do everything right, on the day it just might not work.

Yeah all that stuff does my head in. Went through 4 litres and about 360g of carbs. I'm not actually sure I can get more in 🤢

Definitely sounds like that should have been enough.  Presumably that's 4 litres of electrolytes, not just water?

Endurance sports are weird and totally not for "normal" people.  ;-)

Yeah it was an 'all in one' as I didn't want to faff with gels or anything else.

Ah yep.  I still faff with gels as that's what I use for running.  However, it's far easier to take a gel while running than it is on the bike.

For myself, I usually find it is a mixture of fitness (doing more than one is capable of such as too fast a pace) or nutrition.   In my old cycling days, I used to start drinking fluid several hours before starting to cycle, then do a warm-up, then maintain a constant rate of fluid intake throughout.  These days, due to being old and not so fit, at least one of my drinks will be isotonic juice.    I'm just happy I can pedal 50km without getting sore legs in a reasonable period of time (mostly on the flat - not good at up slopes yet).

Anyone get any new bike toys for Xmas?  Or set any interesting riding goals?

I'm contemplating the Whaka100 this year.  Just working out how to fit it into my calendar around other events as it's a week after the Taupo Ultra.

Already entered in the Faultline 100 mtb (and Faultline 50 run the following day) in April.  Failed that last year so it's unfinished business this year.

A friend did the 100 last year, did an extra 8km after mechanical, riding back, getting it fixed and returning. I suspect he won't be back next year! I'm a bit flat post Whaka50 really. So much work on the trainer then just no motivation to ride through December. To be fair it's been quite hot which means I have to go early.

No new toys but the week before Xmas I finally got my Rail back. Replacement seatstay, Coil fitted, Raceface carbon hoops fitted, Fox transfer fitted and new pads and bled brakes.

Just in time for a summer of riding (even better now my riding buddy has purchased his first EMTB)

what is the range of a full sus e bike on the flat?

and what speed can it go up a 14% gradient?

How long is a piece of string? So many factors but for Me (108kg) on my Rail on the lowest power setting (Eco) on the flat and riding average speed of 26kph you could ride 100km+

Speed up a 14% gradient, really depends how long it is and how fit you are. For me if it was 3km long you would probably average 15-18kph, if it was 1km long you could push that upwards of 20-24kph

All bikes are different though, larger or smaller batteries, different tyres, different motors...

Good questions. I smashed last year's riding total by adding lots of flat commuting but still managed to record more vertical climb somehow. I'm pleased with myself for actually reaching the goal although I cut it close - I was out in cr*ppy weather on the 30th and 31st of December to reach the magic number.

However, when discussing my goal (900km) with a friend he asked if that was a monthly goal !

On the new toy front, this is newish. I'll be up front here - I know the inventor of the Post Guard (tm) and he gave me this item, however, I would have happily bought it.

On the 'ounce of protection is worth a pound of bike repair' theory, this should keep most of the grit etc out of my dropper post's seals.

The inventor told me many shops refuse to stock the Post Guard because income from dropper repairs is easy money. You can buy them from his web site if you are interested.

Shilling over.

Every summer I tell myself I should do one of the great rides or some such but never do. Anyone planning any thing adventurous like that?

I got a puncture on Christmas day, does that count? My last one was about 8 years ago so not too bad I guess.

I'm currently seperated from my bike. Having moved down to Nelson just before Christmas my bike is safely packed up in Auckland waiting for the movers to collect it later in January. I will be looking forward to being reunited with it.

Nelson trails are another level.

I visited the South Island a week or so ago and had an epic day out on a rental eBike at Bike Glendhu.

Right on the shores of Lake Wanaka and Glendhu Bay, this place is absolutely magic.

eBikes are great there as you don't need a shuttle for the long climb to the good trails.

Went with my older brother, who I rarely get to ride with. This would have been the first time in about 5 years!

I rented a Trek Rail 7, while he was riding his own Rail. The rental fleet is excellent there.
The trails are fantastic with a bit of everything for everyone.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Also - while I was away, my Son (21 y/o) asked if he could use my eBike as he was at home and was somewhat curious as to what an all-day experience would be like on my bike.

Immediately after, he was on the market for a good used eBike.

Saturday, we headed to Hamilton to pick up this beauty and head down some trails at Te Miro Bike Park, just outside Hamilton/Cambridge.

It's a 2019 Kona Remote CTRL running a Bosch Gen 2 Performance Line motor and has been mildly upgraded over its lifetime.

He's stoked!
