thermonuclear:

Into race week again finally, the summer break really dragged.

Bottas and Perez officially announced as the pairing for Cadillac next year. I'm in the completely underwhelmed camp on this, though I can understand why Cadillac think this is the right way to go. However, I've seen more than enough of the two veterans try to race F1 cars over umpteen seasons and would have much preferred at least one new rookie to take one of their seats.

On the positive side, another two cars for Lawson to finish ahead of.

Wonder how the Qualifying is going to work next year, has it been laid out anywhere? At a guess it's six cars out in each of Q1 and Q2, or are they going to go with seven out in Q1.

Anyway, looking forward to this weekend.

Perez, not fussed.   But Valteri I'm happy to see back on the grid

Good quali by Liam. Recent trends are Oscar 2.0. There or thereabouts to Hadjar (who was widely acclaimed as the top rookie, not so much now) then he steps up

Liam looked good in quali although didnt nail Q3, but 8th is 8th. Hadjar did well

Given that Ferrari look off the pace, its not unreasonable to aim to hold 8th or get past them

GO OSCAR

My pick is

Oscar

Lando

Max

Both Racing Bulls in the top 8. Bias included, Liam has a bit to offer, Hadjar can be prone to errors, be good to see Liam top 2 of the Red Bull stable

Hadjar pulled out the glory lap when it mattered once again, which is what the real talents in this sport are able to do. Unfortunate that Lawson couldn't replicate his teammate's effort in Q3 but he has to be pleased he got through to the final session once again and was able to secure P8.

Liam's demonstrated strength is his race-pace so I'm hopeful he can hold onto the spot early into the race. With an acknowledged Kiwi bias I'm less confident that Hadjar will be able to hold off Russell and Hamilton and Leclerc, so this could come down to a battle between Isack and Liam for P7-8 at the chequered.

Then there's whatever Racing Bull's strategy dept will do to stuff everything up for both of them. Should be an exciting race tonight. Piastri for the win to extend his slim advantage over Norris.

Sainz was trying to pass Liam. Liam was ahead at the apex. It was Liams corner. Sainz knows the rules. Not Liams fault

Great finish for Hadjar.
Unlucky ending for Liam, but it happens and this time it wasn't him causing the crash (officially)

Some good racing though. I enjoyed it as a casual, so to speak.

When you watch Liam's onboard, just before the impact he glances in his left mirror (so presumably knows Sainz is there), then immediately turns his steering wheel noticeably to the left, which is when the contact happens. So it appears (regardless of who's corner it was), this caused the contact and ultimately the loss of of a strong position that could have resulted in points even if Sainz had got past. And even if it was to correct understeer, that was the end result.

Also, after the incident and on the limp back to the pits there appeared to be radio silence from Liam, usually he is pretty vocal on calling the other driver out.

I could argue that the radio from Sainz implied he had no intention of dropping behind and thought he had done enough to be given the corner when he didn't make it in front at any point in proceedings, and that no matter what Liam did, there was always going to be contact.

The car (clearly) ahead has to have some rights to the corner and to the space, Sainz was not hard up against the white line and didn't move over when Lawson's car (who was undoubtedly ahead) moved (as he is entitled to do).

For Sainz to not be penalised would be saying the car in front has to give total regard to a car that is clearly behind. At that point you might as well just penalise the less popular driver.

Not debating blame, it's just a shame that the apparent actions resulted in loosing a strong position. Even if legally he can make that move, it didn't work out well.

If Liam just lets Carlos go then all it does is tell all the drivers to put their car in that spot and Liam will bail out and let them go.  Much better for any driver to have a reputation to be fighting for everyplace rather than a soft touch who will always let them go.

I think Carlos is just having a tough year and making sometimes average decisions

Great result for Hadjar, kept his nose clean and just went about his business on what was a difficult day for many. Has deservedly added a podium to the list of accomplishments in his rookie season.

Seeing lots of debate on the internet as to whether Sainz should have been penalised for screwing his and Lawson's race. Liam didn't write the rule, nor did the Dutch Stewards who applied it correctly. Whether the rule should be re-written is a different argument entirely. Sainz calling Lawson an idiot and suggesting he's always doing this and is always at fault was just a feeble attempt to deflect blame away from his own stupidity. Quite aside from being factually incorrect as Lawson has been racing hard and clean for quite some time now.

Sainz mentioning he is a GPDA Director, as if this has the slightest relevance in the way he intended it, or that he wasn't trying to pass Lawson but simply trying to put him off the racing line for subsequent corners was similarly laughable. As a GPDA delegate he should have been aware of the rule he broke. As an experienced driver he should have been aware that the track being slippery and the new hard tires likely to be below optimal temperature were a recipe for disaster if he tried to get alongside on the outside of a tight corner. He put his nose where he should have known it didn't belong and stuffed two driver's races as a direct result.

Frankly, a ten second and two points on his Superlicense doesn't seem like enough. Lawson was every chance of a P5 finish at that point. But I guess that's what happens when you're Sainz getting your butt kicked by Albon most weekends, got to look for excuses to deflect from your own underperformance.

Lawson sat in his car for a very long time after he parked up at the end of the race. Desiderio worked hard to try and raise his spirits on the radio, without much success it seems. Really feel sorry for the kid, he should have had another great result at Zandvoort and continued the momentum he's been building into his season recently. Tough break this morning.

Tough for a lot of drivers.  Depression seemed to be the winner on the day.

Hadgar being on the podium must have hurt for Liam being further down.  Liam nearly himself back in the points there with all the other retirements.
I agree with Liam's overly defensive style putting him at risk more, but also in this case Carlos wasn't far enough alongside or ahead to be able to push and claim the space.  Driving F1 as a supercar/nascar body is not a smart move long term.

Stroll did a legend move by just staying on the track as others left it.  Placed ahead of Alonso in this race.

Lewis is either full depressed or just being sulky, but either way that Ferrari just isn't working for him.
I watched some of the practice sessions live and it just looked a total handful, like full random spin out material.

Norris will now be broken.  Haven't seen a full PU failure in some time and he was pushing hard.
Doubt he would have gotten ahead on that track but he did have a few laps left at that point.
Need to understand his starts as they're consistently poor getting away, despite something I saw a while back where his reaction time is really good.
