TwoSeven:

Although I have tubeless, they are set up with tubes. Otherwise I would plug and patch (put a plug in, then add a patch on the inside), although I am out of date with technology.

in my underseat bag, I carry an ultralight tube, patch kit, tire rubbber tape, plastic tyre levels, valves+adaptor and a micro tool and Allen keys in a tool roll with a micro towel. I keep an old 12 inch bike pump strapped to the top tube (it’s 40 years old and I want to upgrade to a modern one that will do my forks).

my background is touring (and my mtb is being set up for that), so I like to be able to properly service/fix things. I do like ultralight, but it’s not the priority, given I don’t really do that type of riding.

Just a heads up. You can't really get a shock pump that will do anything else. Shock pressures are so high and so small in volume that another pump won't work. I say this as someone who has two floor pumps, good knows how many shock pumps and a battery pump 🤣

I'm also firmly in the tube camp despite having TR tyres and rims.  I just can't see any benefit in the faffing around with sealant.

Running TPU tubes so I don't bother carrying any form of patching gear just a spare tube or two.

But yes, agree with mudguard that you'll still need two pumps.  One for the super high pressure, low volume shocks and one for the comparatively high volume but low pressure tyres.  They are both very small in physical size so get dropped into the tool compartment of my backpack.

I am contemplating one of those battery inflators though.

I should have clarified, the battery pump is a small Ryobi pump. Haven't gone to the small portable ones.

The hardest thing about tubeless, is that it isn't obvious how much of a benefit it is. Because flats are so rare, you don't realise what the sealant has fixed.

There are clues. There are little white spots with damp around them. Presumably most of those would have punctured a tube.

It's now only a minor faff to setup. More often it's when you realise you haven't topped up the sealant in a ywar and it's been dry inside for six months 🤣

Touching wood, punctures are rare these days anyway.  The only time I've pulled the tubes out in over 3 years was for tyre replacement due to wear.

Tyre casing technology is a lot better than it was 30 years ago and it's far more resistant, especially since I'm running Exo+ casings.  And I tend to ride lightly where possible so the risk of snakebite type punctures is also much reduced, along with far better suspension.

Redbull Hardline is on this weekend.

Live coverage on Redbull TV from 4pm Sunday, but lots and lots of coverage on all the usual MTB channels this week on YT and Instagram

https://www.pinkbike.com/news/everything-you-need-to-know-for-red-bull-hardline-tasmania-2026-new-features-80kmh-speeds-and-more.html

If anything, they've made it even faster and more extreme, with lots of blind landings and a minimum requirement of 85km/h to make the final run of jumps.

There's already been one injured rider from casing the final jump after she failed to make the speed at the very end of a practice run. Broken collarbone, which is considered a fortunate outcome by comparison to the kinds of injuries that occurred last year (Eric Van Leuven comes to mind). Pic of Erice from last year...

Mountain biker teen Erice van Leuven breaks neck, back in ...

This pic really sums up the racing (in my opinion):

That's a whole heap of Nope from me.

Hats off to the nutters who ride it but yeah, it's gone way too extreme I think.

Watching the track walk and then some practice runs by the pros that are doing this, it really is a cross between Moto GP and Supercross!
Or WRC and F1.

The speeds combined with the extreme nature of the terrain is just mind blowing. I love it (as a spectacle), but I wouldn't want either of my sons doing it!

I was riding home yesterday afternoon and a guy passed in the opposite direction, obviously bike packing , with multiple bags and what not.

But this guy was on a unicycle ! His bike looked a bit like this.

Keen, very keen.

Keep an eye out for him in Horowhenua etc as he heads North

It hurts all over just thinking about bike packing, let alone doing it on a unicycle!
Hat's off to the person (or people) doing this...but I do have to ask - is this some kind of modern version of self-flagellation? 😄

Depending on your saddle comfort, bike packing, let alone on a unicycle could be a hellish torture.

My commute yesterday was over 50km and I am ready to not see a bike again for a couple of days.

Not interested in bike packing but quite happy to enter 100k mtb events.  Dunno which is worse really.  🤷‍♂️

It is only a subset of humans that can ride a MTB 100 km.

And a further subset which enjoys it!

Same as for running ultra marathons.  No-one sane does those.  ;-)

Can't say I've ever ridden a mountain bike that far, and my current saddle is way to hard to support that.   But have participated in round Taupo 3 times, and round the mountain twice on roads.

I have a friend who I always thought was a rational and sane human. He's just started training for ultramarathons.
I worry for his sanity.
