It is only a subset of humans that can ride a MTB 100 km.

And a further subset which enjoys it!

I did the Rainbow rage a few times ~20 years ago.  That's 106km.  Long day at the office.

Same as for running ultra marathons.  No-one sane does those.  ;-)

I have a friend who I always thought was a rational and sane human. He's just started training for ultramarathons.
I worry for his sanity.

No need to worry.  There's no sanity to worry about.  ;-)

A relative rides a penny farthing as a hobby in Japan.

I’ve been converting my mountain bike into a bike packing one.  So far just raised the bar height, put on touring grips and added an ortlieb bar bag. Toying with the idea of replacing the seat post with a Kinekt one, don’t need to change the seat (although there is brooks).

The gearing is only 1x12 so not a patch on my touring bike which is 3x9, but I am enjoying the 2.4” mountain bike tyres vs the 1 3/4” touring tyres.

There’s a guy that rides a Penny farthing here in Chch. I waved at him when I rode past. He didn’t wave back. I suspected his attention was elsewhere and I don’t hold it against hom

I sold my Trek Fuel Ex-e last night. Frees up a lot of space at home (having 4 bikes is too many). Little bit of sadness because it was a great bike but nice having some extra zeroes in my bank account!

I had to look it up.

Smart looking bike. It looks like there's a range of models to exactly suit your needs and extract the most from your wallet !

What made you decide to flog the EXe, as opposed to any of the others? Was it the TQ motor, or the lack of capability vs your preferred riding style?

Good Question, I'm not riding enough to keep both for a start. Its a lovely bike for riding on my own, but I have just had a 2nd mate buy a FF Ebike. Although I am fitter than both, on the hills the Ex-e just can't keep up, so for general all round riding the Rail stays.

Also 750wh battery vs 360wh means you can go a LOT further on the FF. I'll ride the Rail till its close to death, Golf seems to be taking more of my time heading into winter.

FF eMTB and Golf as your two hobbies. My condolences to your bank account! I used to update my clubs regularly when golf clubs were more affordable, these days the most modern club in my bag was released in 2020.

Back to the topic at hand. I suffered my first electronic shifting faux pa this morning when my right shifter stopped communicating with my rear derailleur. Never received an alert of a low battery when setting off but when I got back apparently it was in the 10-25% range. Strange I thought it would still work at that level but it got very sluggish and took a few seconds to respond before eventually going completely off line. I tried to re-pair it on the road which fixed it for 3-5 mins which was enough to at least let me limp home. Not a fun experience so I will be keep a couple of spare coin cells in the saddle bag going forward.

That's one of the reasons I'm avoiding electronic shifting.  Really don't need it potentially going flat mid endurance event.  Cables work, have worked for decades and will likely continue to work long after I can no longer ride.

That's one of the pluses of having hardwired electronic shifting on my EMTB - all the fun and convenience of electronics and none of the hassles of pairing, batteries etc (unless of course I forget to charge my bike, but that's another story all together!).

In reference to the earlier mentioned endurance insanity, I managed to complete the FaultLine (unofficial) duathlon on the weekend.

Kicked off Saturday with 106km on the mountain bike with 2800m of elevation.  Took a mere 12 hours 55 minutes.  Started in the dark.  Finished in the dark.  Hill Rd, Belmont to Wgtn CBD using every possible peak, sometimes twice.

Got up again on Sunday and headed to the startline of the 50km trail run, kicking off from Ian Galloway Park and heading up to join the previous days trail at Skyline and following the second half of route.  10 hours 44 minutes, 55.55km 1900m elevation.  At least the start was in daylight, even if the finish, again, was not.

Wasn't fast, wasn't pretty, but got it done after last years failed attempt.

Two day, two medals, two finisher shirts.  Long weekend out on the trails.  :-)
