I dislike McIvor too but grudgingly think his yachting knowledge isn't too bad - it's his inane other comments I find cringey. He keeps stating the blindingly obvious and repeating it. As @throbb says, he just says stupid stuff. Eg. in the days well before the end of the LV final, before and many times during each race, he kept repeating "This is a must-win race for the Italians" - even if it was 3-2 and 4-3. Just crap - those simply weren't must-win situations at all. The only must-win for them was before the last race when it was 6-4.

Maybe I'm too picky but I find him grating.

Its like that in a lot of sports, someone has to be a sporttainment person

I hear that Tom Brady, who is being paid millions to be a NFL colour person, is not being received that well. Just because you know the sport doesn't mean you are a good colour commentator.

I didn't realise that Tom Brady was a person of colour.

Did anyone see the Canadian incident in the WAC regatta race?
I saw they submarined and damaged their boat, but apparently someone went overboard?
Then the Germans disappeared...I assume to a technical iussue.

This all happened at the start of Group B, Race 6. Canada damaged their rudder and/or foil functionality in the start box which led to the crew member going overboard when she stood up on deck as the boat heeled over, but she never actually lost contact with the boat and was quickly retrieved.

Then a mere 10 or so seconds after the Canadian incident, the Germans also submarined in the start box and the starboard helmswoman's helmet came off in the resulting wave and was lost overboard (the helmet being dislodged from the wearer in this manner is apparently a safety feature - presumably to protect the neck from strangulation force). Because they are not allowed outside assistance after the starting sequence begins, they could not retrieve the helmet and were therefore also unable to race.

Both these incidents are captured in the replay at about 4:13 of the linked video above.

Yowzah! That's some serious raceday action!!
Shame their campaigns ended that way though.

I think the presentation package they have come up with makes watching these races more accessible for noobs. I quite like it.

race 2 was really tight and stressful till the last leg or 2 - but another good win.

Frankly I like that I can watch it on YouTube!

Overall I think the commentators do a great job of keeping it interesting and dumbing down the technicalities for the likes of me.

Apart from”vmg” = “velocity made good”…and then no explanation of that that actually was. As if expanding the acronym makes it clear.

Apart from that, IMO VMG is the most useful stat in the game. I wish they would leave it on-screen all the time or a lot more than the brief showings they give. Boat speed on its own is interesting but not particularly useful.

Good to watch and see the result. IMO it is a pity the races are so short, but guessing that is to reduce the stresses on the boats and peoples short attention spans and broadcasting it is cheaper.

Shortened (distance) when the wind drops.

Not too disappointed with the length (time). Those 3 house races of old were hard

I watched a few old races on YouTube. In comparison to the modern boats they were incredibly boring. There would often be half an hour of nothing happening at a time.

Just my view but i think the coverage in Bermuda was much better.

Maybe because it was a US broadcaster with more funds and a better commentator?

Another win to TNZ. I wonder if that penalty at the start had a huge bearing on it since NZ seemed to increase its lead all the time and Brits just could not catch up?
