TwoSeven:

Not really allowed to ride my bikes now for health reasons, at least for the next six to eight months.  So have taken to planning and doing all those little, one day I’ll get round to it, upgrades.

Surprising how much time one can spend on gear sites.

I think that time still counts as cycling too, so it's good for you.

What with bad weather and getting sick, I haven't been out much over the last month. Amazingly, there's a couple of sun symbols on the weekend forecast so I will have to work hard to come up with an excuse on Saturday, or maybe just give in and go for a ride.

Having had to take an injury based break from running for a couple of weeks I ended up on the "real" bike outdoors the last couple of weekends.  While the trainer is great in inclement weather, one sometimes just has to get outside.  Nothing too gnarly as playing in most bike parks in the wet weather isn't a great plan, either from a higher risk perspective, or from higher trail damage potential.  But still fun and remembering that outdoors is very different to virtual riding.  :-)

Yeah I always find it amusing seeing the trainer stats and say how few watts are required to do "20kmh" then I go out on my big mountainbike with 2.4 soft rubber and 20kmh is about as fast as I can go on tarseal 😂

Which brings me to the never ending gearing debate when people talk about 1x. I look at my main bike with 29" wheels, 30t and 10-50t on the back, I cannot pedal at 80rpm in my tallest gear on anything other than a descent. Sure tyres are a big part of that, but I do wonder where people are missing the super tall gearing.

Its almost getting to the stage (light enough and warm enough) to start cycling to work again for the summer. Might give it a try on Friday.

Fitted a new seatpost to my hardtail after I snapped the carbon one bunny hopping up a kerb and had my backside in the wrong place and leant too far back on the rear of the seat.

Same.  I think I can max out at 45kmh with a 32T chainring, but only with either a solid downhill or epic tailwind.  Problem was that was about the same spin max on Zwift with the 1x setup.  So would usually be running in the top 3 cogs on the flat.  Solved that with the Click & Cog thing.

The weather can sure be a downer. Still, there's been a gap in the weather here and there but for mountain biking, it helps if you don't mind getting absolutely covered in filth.

Outdoors is very different to virtual riding as gravity comes into play a bit more :-)

I tried Rouvy for awhile as it was quite cool riding roads I'd driven on and we used it for group rides for some of us scattered across the country. The problem was the gearing and I found no way to fix it. I have an old hardtail on the trainer with the same gearing as my 29er. But in Rouvy I'd spin out on any descent and couldn't keep up on the flats with the others who had gravel or road bikes on the trainer.

I was able to get around it by putting a triple on, but given I use the Kickr in erg mode 99% of the time it was an annoying faff.

Do not miss the days of setting up a front derailleur. Had to find a shifter, some housing etc. All stuff I'd stripped off a decade ago.

After two outdoor rides I finally remembered to put the winter rear mudguard on.  Just the extension segment on the MuckyNutz guard but it'll make a big difference.
